Question

I Don't Want to Own a 2.3!!!

I own a 2.3, but I'm chunking this guy and sticking in something with a little more power (mine's not a turbo... and it's hardly an engine... 55 is challenging for this guy).

Here's my problem: I'm just learning how to do all of this, and I cannot find a good guide to remove the engine.

the best article (believe it or not) is on eHow and says:

1. remove hood

2. drain the radiator, remove hoses (cut them if necessary, saving metal connectors), remove fan, tension pulley or alternator & remove radiator.

3. loosen power steering pump, pull a/c compressor out of the way leaving hoses connected; take electric wires loose from engine, leaving spark plug wires for later. loosen exhaust manifold & use wrench to take bolts off where the motor is connected to the transmission.

4. raise with floor jack, put on stands. slide underneath and take starter and exhaust pipe connectors off. remove transmission connections at the crossmembers.

5. take the bolts out of the transmission connections at the motor with wrench. use wrench to remove bolts from motor mount connection. slide out & remove jack stands, lower car.

6. bolt a heavy chain to both sides of the motor and bring the hoist around. pull the motor out slowly, making sure the front is higher than the back. make sure not to hit the car as you move the engine away from the car.

reading the list over, it seems straight-forward enough. I just wanted to see if there was anything special i needed to consider for the 2.3 engine?

I'll eventually be sticking in the 5.0 302 and tranny ... just have to get this
one out first!

Thanks!

hood removal is always step 1.

Seems like a guide that someone knew what they were talking about wrote Although it isn't super detailed.

I hate the 2.3 also, but 3.73's make it much better to deal with.

I drive a 1.3 liter Ford Aspire daily...you wanna talk about slow. If you have trouble getting to 55 in your 2.3 ford, may I suggest you are doing something wrong.

this is a good point, although something may be wrong with the engine, besides the fact its a 2.3 without a turbocharger, and im assuming stock/mainly stock.

how in the hell would you know you get someone else to do all of your work, you don't even know what a sparkplug is, but anyway just mark everything real good and take pics of everything when you take it out that way you might atleast have an idea of what it is when you put it back together oh by the way welcome and good luck

If you're not sure how to take the stock motor out, how in the heck do you expect to get a DIFFERENT motor in there? A 5.0's not just gonna bolt in and run - you need to change out a lot of stuff to get it to work.

The 2.3L really isn't that bad when it's put in front of a stickshift.

55mph. hell i had my 91 2.3 5-speed to damn near 100mph. my 2.3 auto car would cruise at 85mph all day long

johnny. just remove anything that is plugged into the engine or trans. start from one side or the other.

oh a tip. the motor pint bolt goes for and aft in the motor mount. it is NOT the one you see on the top of the mount.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Idea! here's what you do. Go to any parts store. Got that? Good. Go to the parts counter. Then (here comes the hard part) buy a Chiltons service manual for your car. It's like $25 and will give you all the specs and instructions to pull a 2.3. It will also probably have enough info in it to help you put the 5.0 in. It's a good thing to have because it has just about all the information you'd need to fix any problem in your car.

P.S. Go EFI. Waaaaaayyyyyy more torque with a long tube EFI intake manifold with virtually no HP loss.
