running rich could cause it, unburned fuel gets hot in the headers. or ignition timing being off, too retarted if i'm not mistaken.

+1 it is either missing, has a fuel issue or the timing is way off.

actually it may have been getting that hot before but the old cast iron manifold wouldn't have shown it like a steel header will make sure your timing is right and your getting enough fuel. and your catalytic (sp) converter may be plugged up

i don't have cats. I don't have an exhaust right now about 12 inches of pipe out of the header. the 02 sensor is half way of that pipe. while i was driving it smelled like it was runing rich?? timing is the same as it was when i was driving it . cam timimg is my concern ,thats the only thing thats changed, whats the best way to degree the cam in one of these engines/
AND YES I KNOW IT'S HOT AND NOT TO TOUCH IT THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONCERN AND FOR FOR MY SAFETY .ENOuGH WITH THAT

thanks for technical help guys, really need it !!!

like we said, check timing and if you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator it'll help alot to determine the issue. i'm betting timing is off and you're running too much fuel, or your timing is off enough to cause your fuel to burn in the exhaust pipe and not in the combustion chamber.

usually its a lean condition. Changing the cam allows more air in the engine and a header allows more air out. Lean.

Tune it.

+1

It is not rich, the timing is advanced and it could use some more fuel I'm sure
