A Four Banger (Building an Idea)

I'm the type of guy who always needs something to do. After me and my bro finish putting that Cobra engine in to a 1998 Mustang GT I think I'm going to go to work on a V4 Mustang solo just so I can have some fun.

I want it to be a car that I can use to take on other four bangers like civics and stuff without having to put the wear and tear on my GT. I also need a car that I can drive every single day that won't make my parents worry about having too much under the hood.

I could use some help putting together ideas on what I need. So far I've figured out that I'm going to get the following upgrades:

Some form of exhaust upgrade
Some upgrades for the pullies
K&N Cold Air Intake
Single Turbocharger
4.10 Gears

My suggestion would be to find a notchback, and swap in a turbo 2.3L. You can make gobs of power with those things, you're still running a 4-banger (and it's an I4, not a V4), and being a turbo motor, you can make it so you stay off the boost during normal cruising, making a very streetable car. The other thing I'd suggest is working on the suspension. I've seen a relatively stock motor 5.0 take a C5 corvette down at our local strreet legal drags, purely because of the way that thing hooked up.

Also, I don't know that you need to go as deep as 4.10s. With the boost, you'll be making plenty of power to spin 3.73s, and the slightly higher gears should make for a better DD.

If you've got the money, an Esslinger head and cam package will go a long way to embarrassing some imports.

Also - turbo 2.3s love 3" exhaust. That, and you may want to run a boost controller. That way you can run 6-8 lbs during normal driving (yay fuel economy), and crank it up to 18-21 lbs when you need it with the push of a button.

Hope that helps!

here check these places out, esslingerracing.com projecthp.ford.com cheaphp.com 40bob.com and most of all turboford.net

i have a 2.3 turbo mustang im building and the car produces about 290hp with a Garrett T3 at 20psi and bored 20 over, next im putting on an intercooler and a 3" downpipe, i got the motor from my fathers 88 Turbo Coupe after he blew it, and threw in another 2.3 turbo from a wrecked 86 tc into his turbo coupe and produces about 350 with no bore or stroke

I see youre also from charlotte, you should check out pullapart over on N Tryon, they have a few TurboCoupes and 4banger Mustangs with the engines pretty much intact since my last visit. you should checkem out...

Also on a side note, my dad also has an 88 Turbo coupe just sittin in the garage collecting dust, needs a bit of mechanical work and some interior / exterior work. ive been beggin him to let me have it, im also interested in making this thing a beast... whats the max power these things can produce with a better turbo with the stock forged internals?

i kno this idea may seem kinda farfetched at first.. but it nets gobs of horsepower that you'll love after you've done it

u said u like to hav stuff to do anyways, and if ur into having a 1-of-a-kind engine.. then here ya go (ok its not really 1 of a kind, but trust me, ull never see anyone in real life wit it)

take ur 2.3 block and get a head off a 2.3 volvo. they're DOHC. they're gonna need some fabrication tho, which is y ppl dont really do it, but its been done (ask turbolx he knos). then u can add ur turbo. y go thru all that trouble u ask? it does seem like a bit much.. until u realize how ez it is to add horsepower with very few pounds of boost

im not exactly sure on the details.. i may be wrong, but ive heard that ford created a DOHC 2.3T that put out more HP than the 5.0 did.. even on low boost.. so they scrapped it because it wud dent the 5.0 sales (or something). anyways, its ezier to add power when u got twice as many valves to push in all that boost, and twice as many to push it out

well now, if ford made something like that now, they might not be in such a bad predicament
