New to 2.3 N/A
Hey all, I purchased a 1993 2.3 N/A 5-speed last week and have a couple of questions. First of all, I cruise at about 3000rpm when I am on the highway (70mph) which I think means I have 4.10 gears...but I could be wrong. Do these cars come factory with 4.10s? Also, I want to do some work to it but do not want to have to tune it. Plans are:
-Full length header, high flow cat/muffler -Small cam for midrange (confused on which one to get) -K&N and silencer removed -Possible underdrive pulley -larger injectors I am hoping to get this car to around 150hp so that it can be some fun. I enjoy it now but I am stepping out from my head/cammed 2000gt so there is a bit of a difference. By the way, right now I have no muffler (previous owner put in straight pipe) and was thinking that this could actually cost some hp due to lack of exhaust scavenging but I could be wrong. I do not mind loud cars but it sounds too "honda-like" to me. All in all I enjoy the car and am glad to be back in a mustang again...even if its a much slower one. |

Hi welcome to the forums.
Do these cars come factory with 4.10s Well... no, but you most likely have a 3.27 or a 3.45 gear set. 4.10 gears from a Ranger pick up will fit in a stock 2.3 axle though. ![]() I want to do some work to it but do not want to have to tune it. -Full length header, high flow cat/muffler check out the Speedflow/Dynatech headers, by far the most power. -Small cam for midrange (confused on which one to get) Racer Walsh stage 1 is the cam to get. -K&N and silencer removed Easy to do. -Possible under drive pulley Check out Speedway Motors. -larger injectors You don't need them at the power level you are seeking. do not want to have to tune it. ![]() If you want to retain good driving characteristics in your car and you want to make some power, then this is an essential part of all of this. Let me be honest with you, you won't see huge HP gains with ECU tuning, but you can really tell the difference when you drive your car. It is worth the trouble.

What is normal cruising rpm then at 70mph. I thought that .79 was fifth gear with the T-5. Thanks for the response OHC230, you seem very knowledgable into these engines. Going to do header back exhaust first

Going to do header back exhaust first
That is a very good place to start from. Anything else you do from there will be much better. I would suggest a minimum of a 2.5" pipe coming off the header/manifold, which should extend at least until the piping reaches the muffler. Here are your T-5 gear ratios ------------------------1st- 2nd- 3rd- 4th- 5th- Reverse 85-86 T-Bird 2.3 T 4.03 /2.37 /1.49 /1.00 /0.81 /0.59 85-86 SVO 2.3 T 3.50 /2.14 /1.39 /1.00 /0.78 /0.59 87 Mustang 2.3 3.97 /2.34 /1.46 /1.00 /0.85 /0.59 87 T-Bird 2.3 T 3.97 /2.34 1.46 /1.00 /0.79 /0.59 87-88 Mustang 2.3 3.97 /2.34 /1.46 /1.00 /0.79 /0.59 89-90 Mustang 2.3 3.97 /2.34 /1.46 /1.00 /0.79 /0.59 91 Mustang 2.3 3.97 2.34 /1.46 /1.00 /0.79 /0.59 92-93 Mustang 2.3 3.97 /2.34 /1.46 1.00 /0.79 /0.59
