Roller cams, any drilling needed?
Im a 302 guy and i know that inorder to have a roller cam, your block must be drilled to accept the spiders. Is the same required for an 89 2.3 to have a roller cam? or are they all rollers (but came flat tappet from the factory like the 5.0 trucks)

The 2.3 in a mustang doesnt work the same way as a 5.0 when it comes to the cam. Its a OHV engine vs a OHC. So in the 2.3 it would be roller followers not lifters like in a 5.0. And with a 5.0 there are ways to go roller without having to put in the spider and drill and tap it. Comp cams sells a retrofit kit which just ties the pairs of lifters together, its just not a super cheap kit.

Ford OHC 2300 cam followers are cool little things. They can easily be procured from a wrecking yard for penny's on the dollar and they are so robust that they can be used again and again, even with different camshafts. I you manage to grab both a roller camshaft and a set of followers from a wrecking yard, the cam can be reground for more lift. A cam grinder wont be able to do much for the lobe center lines, but an extra .050" valve lift, ground into the stock profile, can boost the engines total gas flow by a significant amount. I have tried this before and I was pleased with the results. It's a good "poor man's" way, to get into a roller cam. If you decide that you are interested in doing this, please re-post as there are a few more details about this. BTW, stock 2300 lifters/lash adjusters, typically work fine with most hydraulic cams. They also can be re-used in most cases. Now...what were you saying about $400??????
