Octane Adjust Plug

Has anyone experimented with this little device to find out if changes in the removal or replacement of the plug with one of a different value can generate increased spark advance?

Unfortunately, the octane switches used in turbo Fords are not proportional: they are either on or off. On the bright side, several companies offer dash adjustable timing controls. I use one made by MSD in my car and it was worth every penny.

i wonder if the n/a octane plug is the same on/off characteristic, or if it has some kind of resistance value... time to get out the ohmmeter

No resistance, so it just opens the circuit to let the ecu to make timing changes. So... does that mean removing the octane plug retards timing or advances?

If it advances, then it might be a n/a power adder.

If it retards, it might be good for the NA to turbo crowd...

looks like the timing light needs to come out for a little experimentation

not yet... my timing light crapped out so i found a nice adjustable one on ebay and got it last week. Its a fun new toy... it's a craftsman and it's inductive with breakaway cables and a timing adjustment knob for checking distributor advance and confirming cam timing.

my first use of it was to check to see if both coils on the 8 plug motor fire with the same initial timing.

They do.

So then what is the point of having two sparks? I mean really, unless its igniting unburnt gasses outside of the quench area, its not doing a damned thing is it? Would it be smarter to switch to a d-port head and port the hell out of it? Since the dual plugs arent really beneficiall...

all i have a guess...

ford needed the extra spark help to meet the federal emissions warranty period (if the cars can't run clean for over 50k miles then they fail the tests)

it also completely burns the fuel having 2 flame fronts instead of 1. because normally the quench area disrupts the flame front causing poor combustion. thats why you want to run a flat top piston with small open chambers(keep compression) witch promotes the best scavenging, swirl, and burn(it is what top fuelers run). the only down fall to that is you have to have valve reliefs in the piston and you also just created an interference motor. but fords brilliant engineers just decided to throw another plug in there(European crap alphas are famous for twin plugs hence the gay spark plug wires) instead of redesigning the head and pistons to meet emissions.
