Overruning clutch alternator pulley...

What is it you ask? Its a alternator pulley thats designed to freewheel when decelerating and engage when accelerating.

Its used typically on smaller displacement motors (like new ford focus and transit) to help control engine vibration and hp loss during gear changes.

In theory it seems like this might be of some benefit to the mustang as well, especially 5 speed models, because of the alternators ability to keep its rpms up when the motor decels to meet the next gear.

So... basically it will give back a couple ponies of alternator pull until the motor rpm meets the alternator speed.

I found a pulley that will fit the 87-93 alternator and i'm thinking of adding it.

Thoughts? Additional ideas?

I like the idea, except for the fact that those extra parts add mass to the pulley and there's some extra parts to break, but if you get one cheap enough, who cares, right?

they're about 70 bucks for the pulley, and another 20 for the tool to install/remove them.

they do weigh more (the one I have here weighs 1 lb 1 oz) but thats not treeibly bad compared to the stocker

ya that sounds good but won't the rpms drop slower when you shift? does that pose any problems with speed shifting?

it's the other way around, the alternator will freewheel when you let off the gas to shift reducing the flywheel effect you'd get from forcing it to spin at the same speed as the crank.
