no temp reading and no e-fan

I noticed that the temperature gauge does not rise, and the electric fan only runs with the a/c on. Anyone know what controls these two, a search brings up a temp sensor and a temp switch

there is also the CCRM which is located very close to the passenger side shock tower in the engine bay.

you think the module could go bad?

the module itself has 3 or 4 relays inside. The relays tend to stick; sometimes giving the box a few good hard taps gets them working again.

On the temp gauge, open the hood of your car, standing on the drivers side, look towards the rear of the engine below the oil sending unit you should find the coolant gauge sensor. It should have a single wire attached to it. If you pull that wire off, turn the ignition to the "on position" and the place that wire to ground (any negative voltage source on the car) your temp gauge should move to full hot. If it does, there is a high probability that you need to replace this sensor.

The fan sensor is located on the intake manifold, on the bottom near the center. Pull the wire off the sensor and place it to ground and see if the fan runs. If it does, ther is a high probability that you need to replace this sensor.

I hope you meant that you grounded the plug that attaches to the gauge sensor. If you pull the plug and then ground the sensor itself you won't get anything.

91-93's don't have a cooling fan switch like the earlier pre-90 mustangs do, theirs is operated thru the engine computer reading the coolant temp sensor (the same one that supplies a signal to the gauge).

the ecu then triggers the relay to send current to the fan.

sooo... if both gauge and fan is fubar (without a/c engagement), i'd say your culprit is either the coolant sensor or the wiring itself.

you already know the CCRM box is good because the fan came on with the AC engagement, so you can rule that out.

I tried grounding the plug with a tester with a light, that should still get the ground through right

Thanks for the correction Rob, I was looking at the 85ish Mustang on Ocejo's avatar when answering his question, didn't read his car description.

Ocejo, I'm going to post a wiring diagram for you to take a look at, so you can trace some wires.

Give me a little time to dig them up.

correction theres no diagram fro the coolant switch on the head only the coolant sensor my bad. but ya replace both sensor in the coolant line and the switch on the back of the head i think both combined is like 25-30 bucks i had the same prob and it was the switch on the head. but i also replaced the 20 year old cts too and my car runs cleaner now

test the coolant switch on head by grounding the wire going to it with the ign on and theres a sequence of tests for the cts in the heater hose but really that one only effects rich and lean not temp on the gauge
