84 SVO Trouble
Hey all I'm new to the 2.3 turbo engine and have been having some issues with an 84 SVO I recently purchased. I am hoping some of the 4 banger guru's here can give me a bit of insight and advice on why this thing is doing what it does. I've attempted to go through my local service centers and dealership's only to find that not a single service tech in the Denver area has the slightest clue about these cars. This was made evident when my "Ford Authorized" service tech told me my SVO couldn't possibly be multi port injected....
So here we go. I'll start off by expalining what the car is, it's an 84 SVO stang with a T5. The car has 80k original miles as when I bought the car, the original owner still had the title issued from 1985 with the original lein holders signature. What the symptoms are: Blows black smoke consistantly, above 2500 RPM pops and backfires through the intake, has little power, and quite literally left a black carbon spot the size of a basketball on the driveway after 3 revs to 2800 RPM. What I've done thus far to investigate: Changed injectors, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, fuel filter, injector seals, TPS, idle speed sensor, spark plugs, and wires. I've checked the ECU for trouble codes to find none are present with an Actron CP9015. I've insured the fuel pressure is adequate (Currently 43 PSI @ idle), checked to make sure the wastegate and actuator were operating, changed the air filter, and finally sprayed the intake to insure I didn't have a plenum or manifold leak. Any idea's from you guys on what could be doing this? I'm going to go insane if I don't get this car to run the way it should. Thanks |

Black smoke like you are describing, is usually due to a rich mixture condition. This is often caused by a; clogged catalytic converter, a bad (VAM) vane air meter, or some cases a seized turbo. Without looking at your car in person, my money is on the clogged converter, then the VAM. Unplugging the VAM would improve things if this were the case. The converter can be checked with a back pressure gauge, or simply cut off for testing.

Agree on the clogged converter. I had tried everything. Just disconnect to try it.
