Well the spark plugs are white do to running lean I'm blowing carbon out the exhuast while letting it idle all my fuel trims seem normal I've replaced the coil packs with excel super coils along with the plugs about six months ago the idle sometimes wants to idle at 600 and sometimes wants to idle at 1000 I've also replaced the iac and fuel pump with a 255lph I also have a hard start when extremely cold it will start and stall than crank then blow black smoke out the tail pipe when it does start this all started when the ignition switch went out please help

OK, that is helpful, but can you tell me what caused the ignition switch problem?

What else have you replaced?

I had only owned the car for a month then noticed that it would start ok but you would have to jiggle the keys to get the radio on the window to work and to get the turn signals to work. The night the switch went out I replaced it right away but the new switch melted the main battery fusiable link which I relpace as the car had no battery juice. The only thing else I did was cleaned the throttle body a guy I worked with says it sounds like the car has a misfire causing the carbon when left idling could it be the ignition control module I don't want to just through parts at it and I do work at a shop and have acess to a scanner just not a lot of experiance with obd1 system the car is a 91 5 speed

Good lord. Why the hell cant you use punctuation. It's not that hard. You have a helluva run on sentence there bud. you dont need a scanner. Is your CEL light on? To run the codes there is a connector under the hood, driver side along the firewall. It says something like ECU test on it i believe. Put a spade terminal, crimped to a piece of wire into the connector. Ground the wire to the negative (-) side of the battery. Turn off your defroster/Ac. Turn the key to the "on" position. The CEL will flash in sequences of 3. Blinks seperated by pauses. in between the different codes there will be a long pause. When all the codes have been displayed it will repeat itself. There is a website (thankfully) that has all the numbered codes and correlating meanings. I believe you can find that website it the "Useful 4 banger links" Sticky.

Ps. See how neat and tidy a punctuated post looks?

pps. i lied. its not in the useful 4 banger links.

pss. Look at what a nice guy i am. I found the website for you. Enjoy.

ppss. Also that website has more detailed instructions on how to run a self test if i didnt go in depth enough. it also has magical drawrings and fun colouring places.
