Why do you love your 2.3 so much?

I have a 5.0 to replace my 2.3. But me and some guys at work been throwing the idea around about building a 2.3. So thought I would ask you guys what it is you love so much about modding the 2.3 engines. Save the fact that its a 4 cylinder and its differant. What are the pros and cons? What are the costs? What are the limits on the 2.3?

Im no expert on the 2.3t's, but the things that I like about the 2.3t is the gas milage, durability, they come forged stock and can be had for cheap at the junkyards, make gobs of power for cheap (though it can get $$$ if you go wild with it), its different, and best of all, depending on your exhaust and bypass valve, you never hear them coming... can you say SLEEPER?

I dont know what anyone else thinks but to me its as good as a boat anchor lol you can put a turbo on it though but the compression is all wrong so you couldnt run much boost and the internals arent forged so it may not last long

All depends on how much your willing to spend on it. Around my area they un the 2.3L or 2300cc engine out at eastbay raceway. Bunch of the guys there turn some pretty killer figures but its strictly race applications. If I recall correctly the engines run up to an upwards of 10k rpms and all kinds of other crazy shit. My main reason for my 2.3L love is the fact gas prices are going up and this motor doesn't drink it down that quickly. I'm gettin 20mpg city, did I mention if i'm not doing the speed limit i'm WOT? Ya I think I get around 25-30mpg highway, could be wrong will have to check tomorrow when I gas up. On top of that the motor is small so you have a lot of room to work around instead of having to pull the motor just to change a starter or something. With the size I am I can crawl into the engine compartment and close the hood. Yes i've done it before. Another thing is if your doing some major work to the engine who needs and engine hoist? Unbolt everything and 2-3 people can lift it out by hand. Another thing i've done before Plus modding it isn't very expensive. I've spent maybe 1k in mods so far. If I work all this week then i'm gettin the exhaust system put on and will be going to the dyno to see what she turns in her current state.

you're lookin to keep it n/a? a carb'd 2.3 sucks man.. you can make it fast if you build it up, there's stuff for carb'd 2.3s.. if you look around the internet, you can find 250hp n/a cars that use the bottle to get damn near 400hp. i seen this one 2.3.. it was badass, it was puttin out like 260hp n/a, and on nitrous more than 400. it was carb'd i believe, i kno it had a mechanical cam.. shit was a 10k+ RPM machine

and yea they run 12s pretty easy lol

at 3000 total pounds (that includes the driver if you're 200 pounds) it wud only need (according to the calculator) around 280hp, that's easily attainable w/ a 2.3T, you can run 12s..

and for cost, remember that you only have 1 head. 1 cam, 4 ports, 4 valves, 1 header, 1 exhaust pipe, 1 muffler, 4 pistons, 4 rods.. in other words the parts are cheaper by default

not to mention its an OHC engine, changing a cam is a LOT easier on this than a 5.0, and a cam only costs ~$180.

there's also the 2.3T route.. you can get a 2.3T pretty damn cheap, comes with everything you need, forged internals, the turbo and manifold, the computer... you jus modify when you get the chance

I love the 2.3's mainly because of so much what you could do to it and make it a sleeper

after whomping a V8 and they wanna whats under the hood and when you show them there reactions are proceless, "Thats a fucking pinto motor" holy shit!

the 2.3 you have is basically a boat motor, you can either rebuild that or get a 2.3T donor and drop it in a slap a Holset on it

But depending on the block, if its the 2.3/2.5L block, 500hp is the max well so is the 5L

the 2.9 and 3.0 are a tall deck block, still 2.3 just with a huge bore increase and those blocks can handle 900hp easily

and heres some videos

Enjoy!!
