Dyno Average Cost?
Guys,
Never had my car on the dyno . . . but stopped and asked a local shop recently how much it would be for the tune. Got new exhaust and potentially SPR Headers coming up. Guy said $350? Don't know if that is about right but it sounded kind of high to me. I've already got an SCT-X3 so it can't be for a tuner. I thought that I would mostly only be paying for labor since there aren't really any parts involved. Correct me if I'm wrong but a dyno for an N/A motor (mildly modified) I am anticipating would only take about 30 min? That's equals out to $700/hr. Damn!

National Speed, my closet real race shop charges $150/hr i beleive. and also, if you've got a diablosport, they trade you straight up for a brand new sct x3, as long as you pay for an hour of dyno tuning...
damn good deals/pricing if you ask me |

I'b be much more willing to go $150/hr than around $700/hr. WTF? Of course, I wasn't talking to the owner . . . guy at the front may not have known what he was talking about . . . maybe. Then again, I would assume that if you worked at a mustang speed shop that you would have a general idea of what the prices were going for.
Guess I'll do some shopping around

$600 huh? Actually, I probably paid close to that for mine. Gears . . . plus full bearings/shim kit . . . plus labor . . . oh and let's not forget the "shop fee". Just a little something they tagged on the end. Throw in the SCT and I was over 1K at the time. Gulp! Yes, in hindsight I feel as though I got raped on the deal. But, it was my first mod . . . my first experience with that shop . . . and I was just stoked at the time about getting the gears. I have not been back there yet. That's why I'm a little more skeptical about the pricing of anything now. Really want to know the out-the-door price and what I'm getting for my money.
There are a number of shops around. Just trying to get a feel for what is average cost.

with overhead of a nice shop, and if its a VERY good shop, thats not too, too bad of a price for a dyno tune. it takes longer than 30 minutes to tune a car no matter what it is. you have to set the car up on the dyno, which normall takes longer than that. they have to strap her down, screw in a wideband sensor, and a few other things. i would say if you are mildly modified dont waste your money on a dyno tune, its not worth it, you wont see much of a difference.

Same here in Iowa. Then I think its $80 w/ Wideband. Usually if there is a tune involved its $100 an hour though.

Mail order . . . I don't mind going that route if you guys think that's ok for the mods that I have. It's what I've got now. Just thought that the cams might be too much for mail order. What do you think? new Comp SPR's, new exhaust and a mail order tune?

Both Brenspeed and Bamachips say they have exellent tunes for the new cams. I would tend to beleive them as well. They do great things with mail order tunes. Just make sure you don't leave any mod's out that will effect the tune. You'll be happy with either. If you ahve any problems with them you just send them a datalog an then they will shoot you back a new tune. Good stuff if you don't like the local shops.

thats not a bad price man. at hpp here in dallas it's $350 for a lifetime tune. When ever you come back for a retune, you just pay dyno time.

if any one wants to trade a Diablo for an X-cal at the place Beef is talking about I have one that I don't need... will give it away if someone needs it... my car was tuned with it before I bought it and since then I have gone S/C and X-cal 3... Store that info somewhere Beef and if you know anyone in your area that might want it....let me know...

nah i'm in Camp Lejeune/Jacksonville. wilmington is like 45 mins away. a LOT of ppl go to national speed. supposed to be one the best speed shops around. they've got 'Mustang Day's where, obviously, everybody and their mom take their mustang out there and i'ts like Mad cheap. dyno pulls all day for less that $60.
hey brother thx a lot. i know a kid w/ high expectations of his stang, but doesn't put the time/money in and still thinks he's top par. i'll ask him. he'll pay you for it tho. |
