Of course, I'm dieing to know the real reason why you'd drive 300 miles before getting hard on it. My new rear diff in my 06 Mustang went about 25 miles before the first time I got on it and didnt have any adverse effects. Having said that though, someone enlighten me as to why 300 miles is the break in period for this stuff? Last edited by Whiskey11 : April 7th, 2009 at 10:43 AM. |

Very interested about this have heard mixed reviews myself... I was wondering though if it was bad to run full synthetic right off the bat... I heard that it could back the gears not break in correctly because they are too lubed... Is that bull???

You drive around a bit and if there is a problem you bring it back. Would it take 300 miles to figure out faulty gears or install?
![]() Just asking cause when I picked up my car after the 4.10 install, the guy went for a ride with me and he said they tested it and there should be no issues and no "break in" period. He was right cause I've had the gears over a year and no noise at all. |

I would not see what would have to break in. You have two gears meshed together. If that mesh is set correctly then there should be no wear even at first drive. I had 52k when I switched and the stock 3.55 look just like the new ones.

No break in req.
I would go into why 'I' think shops tell you 300-500 miles...but that would be MY opinion and I don't want to be biased. My first set of gears install were done by a avid circle track racer. He puts in NEW gears...sets them up. Pushs the car to start it and runs the shit out of it. never had a set fail yet...and swears up and down by the royal purple and Lucas diff fluid...says it keeps the temps way down. I have put 2-3 sets in my car and quite a few in others...never made it more than down the street before we were banging gears and doing clutch drops. All the gears are still living...and doing great. |

The hardening or heat treating process is for certain gears...Richmond namely. Its old school.
Bang on it from the get go. |

i turned in the car yesterday and they said to have it go through 3 heat cycles before i mash on the throttle. which isnt too bad so i will do that and going to the track the next day

Make 100% sure that the shop that does the gears knows what they are doing. Incorrect installation will cause roaring, whining, or even vibrations. I am sorting though an incorrect install at the moment and I get roaring at certain rpm and vibrations on decel.....my gears have too much play (side to side) and incorrect pinion bearing preload. They might have been working off made up torque specs.

I also trusted the shop that initially did my install...look where that got me. I basically have to have them installed again. Hopefully the gears are in good enough shape so that i dont have to get a new set.
