NSR cam write up page 2

So now its time to put the cam followers back in....if you havint taken a break yet...do it now! Unfortunantly i couldint take any pics of me using the tool cause I was by myself but i will tell you best I can on how to use it. The tool is fairly easy to operate once you get the hang of it...the trick is to roll the engie into the perfect position to get all 3 followers in...I rolled so that the exhaust valve was getting ready to open...this seemed to be the sweet spot to get all the followers in. The snap into place but sometimes they can be awkward. I will give my number at the end of this for anyone who needs help wit hthat tool. I also have a link to another write up that shows the tool on the cam that i can send you.

Once you get the followers in go ahead and put the cam cover on. TIP there is a bead of silicone on the top and bottom of the head where it meets the timing cover...clean the old stuff off and reapply some new stuff....its worth it to ensure there are no leaks. Once the cover is on re assemble the coil packs and start on the other side...same procedures...heres a tip for the passenger side. Remove the battery. It makes isway easier to remove the cam cover

Remove the battery tray as well, just three bolts hold it in.

Follow the same procedures for both sides and you are all set! The hardest part was having the patience with that Spring tool but in the end its worth doing it that way. This way you know all the followers are in their proper place...It would suck if one spat out of place on start up!

Anyway i am willing to help anyone that tries this install. I am on Mountain time and my number is 1-780-779-8071 my name is Ken. Any questions please call.

Nice write-ups ...

Did you consider only removing the cam using the "Ford" way by taking out just a few of the unloaded followers at the 12 O'clock position and then rotating the engine to the 6 O'clock position relieving pressure on the others before undoing the bearing journals? I'm just curious why you chose to remove the cam from loaded springs first then take out all the journals?

It looks like you have two methods ... in the first thread you said you pulled the cam out "loaded" and then pulled the followers ... here it sounds like you did the "Ford" way ... am I reading that right?

It was quicker...you can do it that way for sure. you just have to do that before you wedge the timing chain...I already had mine wedged and the sproket off.

I was reading the Ford RR and it said to remove only 3 of the followers on each side.

Once you had the spring compressor in there, and got the follower out ... how hard do you think it would be from there to the take off the spring retainers? Does it look simple or are more crazy tools required? Just curious ...

its not a matter of it being hard. its a matter of it being teduis to take out and put in 24 springs and retainers. its hours worth of work in istelf.

its also an additional 350 or so in parts. depending on what springs you go with and the question becomes if you can gain 40hp without doing it. why exactly are you doing it. there are cars on this site, with stage III vsr cams that i already ran a faster time then. Not bragging at all just saying, is it worth it? first question to ask youself is what is your goal with your car, not how hard, or how much is it going to cost.
