Tire Selection
A guy at discount tire said that a 295/45-18 tire would fit on my 18 x 8.5 rim. I would think that is a little to wide for my rim. What is you guys opinions?

What will fit and what is safe are two different things. When I was researching what I wanted to put on my wheels, I found that most tire manufacturers recommended not going wider than 285 on 10.0" rims. They are of course going to be overly conservative since they're covering their backsides, but going even wider on an 8.5" rim seems a little much. Sure, you can make them fit and put them on there, but will it be safe? Plenty of people are going wider than recommended without problems, though, so I'm sure you'll hear from them. I know several people who have 315's on 10.0" rims without having problems, so take it for whatever it's worth.

Thanks for the input. Any one else have a thought? I plan on getting the torq thrust in black 18x10 and 18x9 in the front. I am just going to wait a couple months to save, but I need new tires until then.

No, they are enkei wheels. They are 18x8.5. I bought 255/45-18 tires with them, but would like 295 or 285 in the back.

i have 18x9.5 on back with 295's on them and i lost a little cornering ability when i went that wide. i had better cornering ability when going with the recommended 285's. the 295's look much better though.

you can, but i wouldn't. I had 285/30/20's on a 20x8.5 for a few weeks and the car drove like crap. Going with a tire that is too big for the rim is a waste. You don't get anymore traction, your handling is worse, and the tire is heavier.

well I am more looking to hook in a straight line better. I don't do any high speed turns. Maybe like a hand full of times since I bought the car, so would I be safe with the wider tire?

I wouldn't put wider than a 275 on there. a 255/45 is the best fit. You said you were getting new rims in a few months right? Do you need 4 tires right now? If you could get away with 2 right now, i would just buy some 255/45's right now and then put them on the front when you buy new rims. Putting a wider tire on a rim than what is supposed to go on there isn't going to do anything for you. Even in a straight line.

Ok Thanks Juco. I might have to do that unless you can hook me up with the rims and tires I want with a discount.

although i don't work at a tire place i absolutely concure with juco. nothing wider than a 275 on an 8.5 rim. on my 9.5 out back were it not for going to dr's i would go back to a 285 as i would rather have my cornering ability back rather than the little better look
