stereo upgrade... recommendations?

i've never done anything to a car stereo before, have no idea where to start but have heard that if i replace the head unit it will produce better sound, and if i replace the speakers ill further get better sound. I like the look of the stock size head unit (double DIN?) and was leaning toward the pioneer FH-P8000
Pioneer FH-P8000BT CD receiver at Crutchfield.com
Can this unit handle being upgraded in the future to use an amp/sub?

I know the stock speakers are 8x6's and was also looking at putting in these speakers in their place, pioneer 4-ways
Pioneer TS-A6882R A-Series 6"x8" 4-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

Are these good quality at all or would a different speaker perform better? As far as i understand the more "ways" the better the speaker?

Also the speakers are rated at 5-50 rms it says (don't know if that's especially good or bad), and the head unit is 22 rms. does this mean they would benefit from a separate amp to get their full potential?

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

id pick a head unit either z f or d series so at least u get some navi dvd and music features.. worth the money imo..

as far as amps if u get a sub and upgrade ur interior speakers its best to throw each on a separate amp. i would go over to avic411.com or net.. forgot which and ask there...

u can pick up a z1 for 500 used and upgrade it to a z3 for 200 bucks or like 250... instead of payin 1600 for a z3.

Personally, I'd say if you like the factory head unit, save it for last. OEMs are notorious for using cheap speakers (there are a few exceptions), I would start with replacing the stock speakers with the best aftermarket ones that fit in the stock locations and your budget.

More "ways" simply means that there's more individual speakers in the unit. A 3-way 6x9 just means that the bass speaker in the unit is a 6x9, but there are two additional tweeters in the unit. Gettting 3 or 4 way speakers is a good way to make sure that you have enough high end for the bass the speakers are producing. Personally, I'd take a higher fidelity 2 way over a cheap 4-way.

Once you've brought the stock location speakers up to snuff, then I'd think about swapping the head unit or adding a subwoofer (the first may be prerequisite for the second), if you still feel the need to at that point.

Here is a thread about the FH-P8000BT...

New radio installed... FH-P8000BT - Mustang Forums at StangNet

This is the same unit that I have. You can't beat the features and the sound quality for the price.
