I believe there is a way to do it without the wedge and without pulling the front cover. PM Bluestorm, he did mine without the wedge as far as I know.

get a second pair of hands (friend, parent, just anyone).............set the cam where you need it, and remove the three journals........and now is where the friend comes in handy.......THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! remove the bolt on the front of the cam that holds the phaser on. when you remove the phaser, DO NOT take it off the chain, just pull it forward with the chain still on it and KEEP TENSION ON IT!!!! dont let ANY slack get in the chain, or it could jump a tooth. while your friend is holding the phaser (make sure its a patient buddy), you swap the cam real quick like..........then suck down the cam journals (not very tight, just tighten them up until there is no slack. set the phaser back on the cam and install the bolt. now you can procede with torquing and all that other fun stuff. that should work, but im not promising anything.

okokokok wait a minute....
so the bolt (i'm assuming) that holds the cam in, remove it? will this make the chain/sprocket free? that's when my buddy has to hold it in place, correct? then i pull out the cam, swap it, then replace the sprocket with the phaser?? then reconnect the journals? Edit: i am calling the phaser bolt the phaser and the sprocket is actually the phaser

the sprocket and phaser should come off as one piece if i remember correctly.......its just one bolt in the front holding it onto the camshaft. remove it, get your friend to hold it TIGHTLY (you can also get your friend to hold "other" things tightly for you later if you want hahaha jk)..........then you swap out the cam. with the journals already removed, there should be no spring tension on the cam, which makes it a fast and easy job

alright, i've already got the journals off, i think it's actually 4 journals. but anyway, by tension, do you mean just to hold it in place firmly? or pull a certain direction?
**might be a stupid question, but how do i know which cam goes on which side or does it matter???** |

It DEFINITELY matters. One cam might even be longer than the other if I'm not mistaken.

it matters........i know with my comp cams you can look at the part numbers and tell.........i think the last letter on them were L on one, and R on the other (for left and right)..........you dont need to pull the cam journal a certain way, just keep the slack out of the chain and dont let it jump a tooth. it wouldnt hurt to take a sharpie and make a mark on the chain/gear as there where it goes just in case you mess something up. also its three journals (as per the Ford way)

the wedge isnt really important unless you plan on removing the phaser from the car (to install lock-outs or limiters).........if its just a direct bolt in cam with no phaser mods, all you have to do is unbolt the phaser, hold it forward of the cam, install the cam, and then reverse the removal procedure. follow your torque specs too, its important.

hey rich i tried calling you. sry it was so late i lost track of time. anyway, ya i know i can't reuse them i'm going to go by ford tmrw when i drop off my valve covers. and i need to get a torque wrench..
so here's what we did... Unbolted the phaser bolts, my buddy held the phaser/chain in place as i swapped out the cams....one follower fell out, but i wiped it off good and placed it back on... then i put the new cam on and lined it up correctly with the keyway so i was in there nice and tight. walked the phaser back on and put the bolt back in (for now) just enough to hold it in. as we were doing that, i put the journals back in place and tightened them back in; just snug....complete (for now) ok so what did i fuck up..? |
