Whine on acceleration that mellows out when the axle is no longer under load is usually due to improper gear set up or worn ring and pinion gears.
Deceleration whine is usually attributed to the pinion bearing. Either bad preload or a bad bearing itself. Deceleration whine almost never has to do with the ring and pinion gears themselves.
Whine that starts after the vehicle is moving and is steady across all MPH ranges torque loads can be bad or old carrier bearings.

There are a bundle of other potential causes but these are the most likely culprits. Depending on where the whine is happening it could become more than just an aesthetic problem. If ignored they can cause a major failure in the ring and pinion and leave you sad on the side of the road, or worse.
Mine whine all but decelaration!!!! Why? Are you a mechanic?

Naw, not a mechanic. A few years back I tried to install gears on my Jeep. I ran into a lot of problems doing the job and researched a TON on this topic. After that experience it's now one of the only jobs I will not do myself on a vehicle =).

There is a lot of misinformation and mystique around gears and why they whine \ shudder \ bang \ growl etc. I just wanted to clarify a few of the common reasons why they whine and let people know it may not just be a noise problem. Depending on the symptoms it may lead to a seized axle if not looked into.

i would kit the install kit even though if you are care full you can reuse the pinion bearing and crus sleve..... be carfull with the crush sleve cause if you over preload the bearing......take it all abart and do it all over again(once you get another crush sleve of course

Sorry for the late reply,I have been out of town . I really like the gear in my auto, big change over the 3.31's. I plan on a supercharger in the future so no need for a really low gear when you have horsepower. I am not building a race car I just want a fun street car that I can take a long trip in. As far as the whine goes it gets louder the faster I go but is not that loud.
