Stange noise from engine **with video**

Can anyone tell me what this noise is? Its the louder clunking noise. It doesnt cause an idle change or shake the car.

I'd like to hear it with varying rpm's ... initially it sounds like an exhaust leak.

That is not a exhaust leak. That is something mechanical for sure.

Get short piece of broom stick or a long screw driver and hold it to your ear and on the cam cover and listen to the valve train, moving from cyl to cyl. You can use this trick isolate many strange noises coming from engines, like bad alternator bearings, etc. To my ear it reminds me of a bad rod bearing, to determine which one disable each spark plug one at a time till the noise stops. By eliminating the load(combustion) on the rod the noise will go away or at least lighten up. Don't ask about how I know the rod bearing trick.

Sounds like a collapsed lifter. Is there oil in the car? When you revv the engine, does it get faster and louder? Does it get louder when the engine slows back down than when it speeds up (that'd be more likely a rod bearing)?

There is oil in it, I checked it and it shows there is enough oil in there.

It doesnt get any faster or louder, it actually quiets down the more it revs. It does get a little faster though, just quieter as the revs get higher.

hmm my guess would have been a lifter tapping too, but if it doesnt get faster with higher rpms then thats not it...

it can be many things.. most of them not good... were you running it hard before it started? what weight oil are you running? the noise might go away with a thicker oil. it could be cam phaser lash which can be caused by the computer advancing/retarding the timing. It could also be a pulley on the serpentine belt... it it wasn't being beaten then it could be electrical/programing/oil pressure. if it was driven hard just before the problem started then it could be deeper... another way to isolate the noise is take a piece of vacuum line and use it like a stethoscope..

Sorry i mis-worded my last post. I meant to say it DOES get faster with revs but gets quieter with more revs.

I do drive it hard sometimes so I guess it could be something mechanical. Its just weird that the CANBUS system reset and then I really noticed the problem. It seems to me like its coming from the top of the engine on the passanger side. Seems more likely to be something in the head, people have told me that the cam phaser gear can go bad and cause a loud noise like that and I guess a loss in power because its not advancing the timing. Isnt there spring in there that makes it return after advancing the timing, when the oil pressure goes back down?

I am very lost in this but I guess I will keep searching for the answer. My wife told me that she sort of hear this noise before the CANBUS system go reset but after it reset it seems to have gotten louder. It just confuses me a LOT

Cam follower or exhaust leak. If you have the stock manifolds, then the likelihood of it being an exhaust leak is pretty slim. With a bad cam follower it would make sense that the sound is coming from the "top" of the engine.

Would a cam follower cause a decrease in power?
