Summer only, decent weather. Which tires?
I'm trying to decide what kind of rubber I am going to order in the next couple of weeks. I have it narrowed down pretty well. Heres what I came up with.
I have 17x9's at all 4 corners. Nitto 555's front and 285/40 555's rear - $664 shipped from Discount Tire -or- Kuhmo Ecsta MX's 255/45 fronts and 275/40 rears - $562 shipped from Tirerack I currently have a set of Kuhmo Ecsta SPT's in the same size I listed for the MX's mounted. They are in need of replacment. What do you all think? The car sees the strip every once in a while and doesn't see twisties to often, but there is potential that it could see a road race or maybe a auto-cross session maybe twice or three times a summer. I have a daily driver so the car will not often be driven in rain or crappy days in general. Never will see snow. Last edited by JakeM; January 20th, 2009 at 06:19 PM. |

They aren't made in the size I want for the fronts. Also, they are a more expensive than either... You loose!
Don't have anything against BFG's though.

Hey Towelly when you get the tires from DT get the replacement certificate. Well worth it. I had brand new Nitto 555 and 2wks later one of them had a punture on the side wall. Its better to pay it up front than to pay for $200+ for a new tire. Get in touch with juco and see if he can hook you up.

sorry couldnt help myselfBut I actually prefer Kumho Ive been running them on my cars now for the past 10 years and never had a problem with them. The summer tires I will say dont have a very long tread life but they do keep traction even in pouring rain.

Right on. I've had about the same experience. I don't expect them to last forever, I'm not exactly easy on the throttle. So tread life isn't something that I worry to much about. Two summers worth of driving is more than good enough for a set of tires with my driving style. |

Road noise isn't bad at all. I've had them on for a few months now and there is still plenty of tread on them

Cool. I'm still pretty torn. I guess I'll PM Juco and see where that leads. Thanks for the heads up on that. I almost forgot he works for DCTD.

Waiting on a PM from Juco, then I'll make my decision. I'll be picking them up soon though.

Thats a pretty deep cut on the nittos.
All i will say is remember your handling, hooking, NVH, starts with your tires. There isnt a more important decision, the suspension starts there. Cheap on tires is the wrong place to go cheap. In either of your choices know that your not talking premuim tires. Its funny to me when guys say wow i cant beleive you use a arms with rod ends on your car as much as you drive, or the k member is that really good for a DD. Then they have walmart tires on their car. Im not calling nittos walmart tires by any means. The nittos were great as far as lasting and cornering. But for ride quality i realize now they werent the best. As far as a daily driver tires, i will never step back down from top notch tires. |

I don't recomend any. The Nitto was a very impressive tire when you factor the 300TW rating. The fact that i got about 40,000 miles out of it the way i drove the car, most of that was hgwy, but also a lot of racing and weekend parking lot to parking lot cruising. Its an impressive tire for the money. really they arent even worn out, if it wasnt the for -camber i still had probably 10,000 miles on the tires. But when i went to the supercar tire. The difference in ride quality was night and day. I think the F1 is overpriced, at least the prices i was quoted so im not saying you should get that. Plus when you look at the 200tw rating on the f1, its not going to last that long. But just keep in mind, if ride quality is important to you then ask those types of questions. Maybe there is a tire with better ride quality and decent tw thats reasonable. Just dont blame your prothane bushings for all the negative feedback when your tires aren't helping is all im saying.

I will take your opinion into consideration, but I'm still on the fence and sticking with the Kuhmo or Nitto debate at the moment. I understand where you are comming from though. I just want to spend $1500 on 4 17" tires. It would be differen't if I was rolling 20's or had some suprwide rears. |

I understand that totally. Then i give my vote to the nitto but i dont have any expereince with the other brand you named. I mean look at the speeds i put the nittos through and the heat. 20 minute sesssions doing laps hitting speeds of 125 130. 4 sessions in a day. They held up, you can damage a tire doing that. |
