Install labor hours for CAI/Tune, and 4.10 gears
Hi guys,
I'm trying to keep my mechanic honest. Anyone have an idea of the total labor hours for installing 4.10 gears, and a CAI/Tune? I'm ordering the "Steeda Ultimate Induction Power Pak" ($699 on the steeda site), and want to factor in the labor for my budget. Any idea on the number of hours? And for the 4.10 gears, I have a good price, just looking for expectations on how much labor. thanks!

3 hours or so for the gears. I would install the intake and tune yourself honestly. It is rather simple.

See if you can get the tune changed to accommodate the 4.10 gears (unless you already have) or your speedo will be off... For gear install I wouldn't pay any more than $500 and that is kinda a high estimate depending on where you go.

Should be able to get gears done for 350-500 in most parts of the US. Intake is at most a 1 hour labor job, easily done yourself with a screwdriver and ratchet.

I think I can handle the CAI install... I was just a little worried about messing up the Tune. I need to do some research. I really don't understand the whole concept yet. I went to the SCT website and was watching some videos and reading some manuals. It seems pretty complicated. But then again, I'm kind of a dummy.

Stop thinking about paying someone to do the cai and tuner. It will take you 30 minutes to install both. The intake is going to be a few bolts including removing the factory airbox, etc. The tuner just plugs into the ODBII port and you follow the on screen directions. If you can push labeled buttons when it tells you than you can load the tune.

I would not be afraid of the tune. You buy the tunes and jsut load them into the car. If you can operate an ATM machine then you can use the SCT. I put my CAI in my car during my lunch break.

I can hook you up with a JLT CAI and X3 for my non deal price of $568. PM me and i might be able to do better. Save at least $130 for pretty much the same thing.

If you haven't already ordered the CAI kit, I recommend getting it from American Muscle. It is cheaper than Steeda, and costs even less if you can get the 6% code from Nick on here. Plus free shipping and Tunes for life from them. Check them out at 05-09 Mustang Cold Air Intakes at AmericanMuscle - Free Shipping!
I just got the Steeda Kit, Pypes Mufflers and Steeda UnderDrive pulley from there a few weeks ago. I was having an issue getting the tune in right, I think because I was scrolling through the screens and pushed something by mistake. Daniel at AM was excellent at emailing me back with help, and I got it all working. The gears are my next thing to get, and I am estimating 3-4 hours on install time. Boy can I already feel the difference without the gears!! |

So easy a _________ could do it.
I ordered the Steeda CAI/SCT tune package from Brenspeed. They ship the handheld with three pre-loaded tunes. Economy, torque and race. The CAI comes with instructions. I was able to take off the old intake and install the new Steeda myself. Only tool I had to borrow was for the MAF sensor (the star shaped alan wrench). The hand held tuner plugs in under the steering wheel and you select which of the three tunes you want. After you have the gears installed you simply plug back in and arrow down on the screen till you see the gears option. Just follow what the screen tells you.
