dyno tune & flash tune
why is it a good idea to get a dyno tune? (I never got one before) and when in my mod prosses should i get one? (mods at bottom).
also why are alot of you going with the xcal tuner instead of the predator, is there really a difference? thanks for responding. 07 gt c&l cai, predator tuner, bassani ss x pipe w/cats and axle back,and 410 gear. my future mods are pulleys, maybe a tb spacer, springs, and wider 18's (wheels) and that should be it. |

The main reason for a dyno tune is because having the person right there able to change parameters in a program will help achieve max power. With a dyno tune, the tuner will upload a program and run the car on the dyno, look at the results, and adjust what needs changing until you get max readings on the dyno, then flash The final program into your cars computer.
Another good thing about a dyno tune is if you go back to the same place after installing new mods they will have your old tune as a baseline and it will be easier to retune. Or you could have some company write you tune after tune and flash them into your car but without the help of the dyno you won't really know where your improvements are and what should be changed more. Don't think that the tunes you get sent to you are no good, they should all be tested and proven to work before the tuner sends them to you, it's just that some times the tunes are a little on the safe side since all cars will not react the same to the same tune. Certain mods require a reflash, so your best bet is to try to do mods that you know will need a reflash before getting a dyno tune. |

while we are on the subject then, do you need to buy a tuner such as an xcal 2 if you are planning on taking your car to a dyno?

You do not need to buy the tuner if you are going to take it and have it dyno tuned.
If you don't buy a hand held tuner you will not be able to re-flash your car back to stock prior to going into the dealership for any kind of work that requires them to run a diognostic test. From what I have been told, not 100% sure, but if they run a diognostic test and you have had your program changed it will show up as having had the battery disconnected. The diognostic computer will then set your cars program back to stock. And since you do not have the program that your tuner installed it may not run like it should. You could always go back to your tuner and ask them to re-flash for you, not sure how much they charge for that. Also with the hand held tuner there are some options you can adjust yourself. The Xcal will hold 3 tunes plus the origional stock tune. |

As far as I know most companies purchase the big expensive computer edit software and have this available for you to use at a greatly discounted price (course then they charge you hourly for the tune usually). For examlpe my friend has a transam and the program that would let him fully edit his ECU anytime is LS1 edit and runs around $1,000. It's better to dyno tune if you are going to say, do like head and cam work for sure rather than flash it as compared to just some intake and exhaust work and gear changes.
