Why do you think it would bend around the pins and not around the factory latch? There will be 2 pins compared to only 1 latch....just my thinking...

Keeping the latch is essentially a double up in safety. Easy to pull off and not have the pins in sometimes, especially since without the latch the hood will appear closed from the driver seat. If the latch was there and not engage the hood would sit raised a bit.
