questions about hurst shifter??!!!

I installed my hurst comp/plus shifter a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone had a problem with the shifter rubbing the side of the area where it's mounted..inside of the car. When I'm in first gear it's sort of tight and has rubbed a whole in my shifter boot where it meets the plastic..and also around the molding that holds the boot on the stick. Is it mounted wrong..why is it off center???.....or is it just like that. I've had no other problems...the shifts are smooth and it seems to be working perfectly other than this. Anyone else have this problem? Your help will be a big help. Thanx

I've installed a few... I've never had any problems with any of them.

It sounds like you installed the shifter backwards. In the directions it tells you to ensure that the longer side of the sleeve housing is facing the driver's side of the car. If that isn't adhered to, you will get rubbing along the sidewall in first and second gear. Looking at the shifter assembly, the difference is not that noticeable, but once it's in the car it does make a difference. PM me if you have any questions. I have installed 3 of these assemblies, and not had that problem yet.

Thank you for the info for sure. I want to put a Hurst shifter in my 07 GT but hear stories about one problem or another with them. But it sounds like faulty installation some what. Do you feel this is a good shifter? And is there a problem with the shift lever working loose from the shifter its self?

Something about two small bolts that can work loose on ya, is what I had heard.

Thanks again sir.

Use a drop of Loc-Tite if your in doubt. Hurst is a very good shifter, but so is the 5.0 and the Steeda.

I really like the hurst. For the price it's hard to beat. I too have heard good things about the tri-ax and the pro 5.0. I just can't see paying that kind of money for a shifter. I picked mine up at Brenspeed on sale, they seemed to have the best price. As far as the actual stick working loose of the shifter... it happens. I tried loctite and it only stayed connected for about 500 miles. After that the slop was back. I ended up going with longer bolts and locking nuts for the assembly. 1000 miles and no problems yet!

I used red locktite instead of blue, no problems thus far after 1500miles. I really like the shifter. It is notchy, but I see it as positive engagement rather than a negative change from stock.

I had the dealer install the Hurst as part of the original deal after I test drove a Shelby and never looked back. Was like a different transmission!

Really just helped it through a "breach" birth. Found the color and creature comforts I wanted, then Regency applied my exterior vision perfectly and started me down the performance road. Gotta clean up a small exhaust mistake and do a few more really right things to it....with some help from experience. This will be a daily driver for me. Pictures soon as I would enjoy the fedback.

Hell, my wife digs it!

Installed my hurst shifter about 5,000 miles ago. i noticed the same problem concerning the leather boot rubbing on the plastic molding but all i had to do was slide the boot up the shifter and it allowed it to shift without rubbing. As of yet i havent encountered the loose bolt problem. sounds like some of the hurst units do and some dont. just know it is a possibilty but as for mine no additional fixes other than what's prescribed in the original installation instructions. the short throw shifting definately adds to the enjoyment of driving the car, what ever shifter you go with.
