Line Loc w/Clutch Staging
Ok, so I got my Line Loc ordered and was throwing around this idea about setup for track. My track experience has always been with automatics using transbrakes, because of consistency. I just love this car with a stick so I am trying to get the same type of setup.
2 switches, 1 to Active Line Loc (like normal use), and 1 to Override for a switch on Clutch. So Switch 1, Line Loc works like it does normally, apply brakes, flip switch, locks front only, do burn out, flip off. Now staging, Flip Switch 1 to arm, ease up to line using clutch to stage, apply brak, Flip Switch 2 to allow Line Loc to disengage off a custom switch on clutch. Would only disengage when clutch is all the way out. This allow me to use the clutch to pre-load a little (clutch slippage) before launching at 3000-3500 RPM’s Again this is just one idea I am throwing out for discussion Concerns I have is its a lot of things going on to stage in a such a short time. So this why I am posting to see what others with sticks are doing at the track for staging and/or using some other type setup.

all i have is a line lock and i love it...i just stage normally clutch pedal slightly depressed so its got its preload and i launch at 4K..thats way too many things to be thinking about in that short amount of time..

On my car I just have the line loc hooked up to a momentary switch on the shifter and release that and the clutch at the same time.

I have 3 switches. The first switch is for arming the linelock switch (12v switch). The second is a switch next to the arming switch that I use for burnouts (switches ground). The third switch is behind the clutch pedal that engages the linelock when the clutch is pushed all the way in (alos switches ground). So, here is my routine:
Burnout: Turn arming switch on, push brake pedal to floor, turn burnout switch on, release brake pedal, do burnout, switch burnout switch off when burnout is done. At starting line: pre-stage car, inch up to stage beam, when stage beam comes on, push brake pedal just hard enough to stop car, push clutch to floor engaging linelock, release brake, bring revs up to about 5k and release clutch pedal on last amber. At finish line: turn arming switch off before hitting brakes. Seems like a lot but it's really not. |

Thanks Vista, I figured someone was doing something like this already. I know staging, it goes pretty quick so much practice would be required to get the routine down.

It would be much easier if I had a 2 step so i wouldn't have to look at my tach to check RPM's. I run 2 classes, footbrake and street legal. Neither allows 2 steps.

I believe the way Vista has it htough, the brakes are released as soon as the clutch pedal is up, just to stop the car from rolling on the line.
Pre-loading the engine with clutch slippage is not really a good idea unless you want to burn up your clutch. It isn't going to have the benefit that a transbrake has, because a clutch does not multiply torque like a torque convertor. It's not so much because you are "loading" the engine, it's because the convertor is multiplying torque while you are slipping it, so when the brake is released there is a large amount of torque "built up". I guess it could help build boost in a turbo car, but bouncing off a 2-step will do that as well.

We could make it happen with a few relays. The hardest thing would be how you would setup the clutch especially if you have to slip it out of the hole.

I think the setups are identical, maybe I explained it differently but basically the idea is arm the system with one switch and then have one to allow for a locked burnout that the clutch would not affect, then be able to switch back to a clutch type lock/release.
Either way, the idea is to automate the release.

I believe in this case, you would just flip the main arming switch to disarm the system, thus releasing the lock altogether.

I made this setup for my fox and it can be altered slightly to do what you want to do.

I guess I would really have to be a strip only car to set all that up... I hope I never have the bug to go that direction.. It will be interesting to follow your progress tho.. good luck..

Yep...simple wiring and can be shut off when not needed.
