You don't need special tools. It's really easy. There are alot of write ups on how to do it. Only word of warning from my experience is to check the three small tension pins holding the reluctor to the cam phaser. If any of those are missing or the reluctor is loose get new tension pins.

There is the write up. Yes you need to replace the phaser bolts. You could use a spring compressor and the timing chain wedge or some guys do it without, if you have two people you could do it without. beefmobile didnt use a wedge or compressor. You need a in-lb torque wrench. I think thats it. |

You should have the timing chain wedge and the valve spring compressor. I know some guys do it without the spring compressor, but the cam journal caps are torqued to 89 inch lbs and to get that torque figure correct you can't have any of the valves open at all. You don't want any upward pressure on the cam journal caps while torquing the bolts. The upward pressure will mess with your torque setting. Since the engine uses no cam bearings at all this torque figure is extremely important. The compressor is used to remove 3 rockers (cam followers) per side so no valves are open. I know some guys have claimed to have a big fat fuck push down on the camshaft while the other guy torques the bolts. I guess it's possible...haven't tried that before.
QTRHORSE, if you need a timing chain wedge I have them real cheap (new tools) Just PM me. I don't have compressors for sale.

awsome point on that torques spec being off cause of spring pressure....never though to that but sounds correct. i removed the followers.

They wouldn't have you take them off in the repair manual if it didn't matter. I could see if the bolts were torqued to 50 ft lbs or something, but 89 inch lbs is very light.
