installed cams, need help

Alrighty then, I just finished installing a set of FRPP cams, and the install went great maybe to well. Anywho, I went to start it after double checking everything was connected and well it won't start .

It tries to start but stumbles and it only seems to be firing on a few cylinders. At first I thought it was the coil on plugs but I took them all out again and reseated them, same thing. I do have an aftermarket canned tune from my tuner in the car, should I return the tune back to stock??

Is there anything else that you guys can think of for me to check?

At the front of each valve cover there is a small black square on a mounting bracket that is part of the ignition system, did you properly reconnect and mount them? Make sure everything is connected and mounted properly. Any fuel injectors that may be unplugged, etc.? Is the check engine light on? Use your tuner and see if you get any tunes. And, are you SURE the timing is correct?

I don't think its the fuel injectors as I can smell unburnt fuel coming out the tailpipe. I am not getting any check engine lights. I will recheck all connectors and see if I can see anything. The only thing im not sure about is the coil on plugs as when I was putting then in there was no click or anything.

As for the timing i'm not sure about that, I was thinking of returning it back to stock and see if that helps.

with the valve timing off though it would most likely backfire a lot when running, or not run at all. You may be right to suspect an igniton issue. I don't think you will feel a click though when the coils are seated.

Are the camshaft position sensors installed correctly?

I believe they are. But I did find that I forgot to connect, well its a big connector right beside the ECU that has 4 leads going into it. Connect and still nothing not even firing. I think its flooded now as I have been trying a lot, so I will wait until morning and try it again. Finger crossed.

I just finished doing mine. The cops won't make any noise going back on. One thing I had a problem with as getting the damn rockers to stay in place. I would assume that if any of them slipped down far enough that nothing would touch it and would cause it to not want to start. Also, what did you use to keep the chain from slipping? The last thing would be to check and make sure you put them on the right side, I know this sounds stupid but one of the guides I read online had it wrong.

yeah I had a hard time keeping the followers in place. One falls out so you go and put it back in and you hit the one beside and it falls out.

As for the chain, I tied a few zip ties around the phaser and tied a rope to the ceiling of the garage, And I also had my dad hold the sprocket and chain up while I removed and place the new cam.

I also just realized that I decide to roll the engine with all coils unplugged just to see if any weird noises were going to appear, so I think that flooded the engine as I did roll it for a while.

hold the gas to the floor when cranking, it will disable fuel injection to "clear flood".

^^ Yes, this should help if a flooded condition exists.

well, went out this morning and it started right up . So it seems to be a combination of the electrical connector that I forgot to connect and it was flooded.

Took it for a spin and it satisfied the butt dyno, next step is to get her dyno tuned at some point this week. Other then the pulsing idle everything seems to be OK, which the dyno tune should fix the idle.

Yeah, my tuner has done a few of the FRPP cam tunes on the dyno so I think i'm gonna be OK there. Its just trying to find time to bring it there.

There is fuel in the oil and I do plan to change it. would 5w30 synthetic be OK to put in these motors? as I have a few cases of 5w30 Castrol Syntec, that I bought when it was like $25 for 6 quarts plus k&n oil filter.

+1 with the cam phasers being oil-pressure dependent and the tolerances in our engines, you'd sleep better at night knowing you had the right weight oil.

Yeah, you need a 3/8'' drive inch/pound torque wrench.

Thanks Anthony I need to pick that up for sure..
Sorry ment to say I am doing my delete plates at the same time... Sorry man..
I also read about people doing it without a valve spring compressor... I could probably get my hands on one just wondering though... I am going to either make my own wedge out of wood, hose or something... Any ideas..
Not sure I will be able to tie to the ceiling lol... Nice idea though...

I just used zip ties and rope to tie the phaser and to the garage door opener bracket on the ceiling. But what I found to be best is to get someone to hold the phaser and sprocket up as you remove the old cam and place in the new cam. I also tried a bock of wood but couldn't find anything narrow enough to fit down and also I didn't want any wood chips/shavings to fall down in the motor.

I also didn't used a spring compressor either just got the cam in a sweet spot just enough to get the caps back on and then tighten them in sequence. Just be careful that the followers don't fall out of place.
