Mods and Warranties

Well was talking with a buddy about putting LT headers, X pipe, and exhaust along with an intake and reflash on my 09 GT. One of the guys in the group said that if the parts and work is not done by the dealer it will void the warranty. To me this this sounds like car salesman BS. My impression was the warranty is valid unless the dealer can prove that the mod was the reason the problem occurred. For example if the radio goes out and I have the above mods according to him it is not covered by my warranty. Although to me those seem like fairly harmless mods. Any thoughts?

Usually the rules are that it is covered as long as the modification didn't cause the problem. But there are a few dealers that will bend the rules and try to turn any warranty claim into customer pay.

If they try that simply ask them to explain exactly how ( on paper of course) the LT's made your radio crap out. Say thank you and have a nice day. Then make a copy of that paper they wrote up and write a letter to Ford themselves about how incompetent their techs are when you got three other mechanics saying the exact opposite thing. that'll get you a new radio real quick.

The factory warranty will only be lost for the aftermarket part and any parts that are related. So, if you blow your motor by putting a supercharger on it they don't have to warranty it. If you put a supercharger on your car and your radio goes out, they have to warranty it. There are dealers that will try to blow up smoke up your ass but just remind them of the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act.

So obviously a radio is an example of something going wrong that can't possibly have to do with an engine mod (although PERHAPS they could suggest underdrive pulleys affected the electical....), but what about less obvious examples. So if I, like most, have a tune on my car and say the fuel injectors go? What then? Or what if the rings go and I start to burn oil? Is it because of the tune? Its these more ambiguous cases that are more interesting. That's why I kept my stock air cleaner. I figure if it needs to go to the dealership (provided I can even drive it there), I'll switch out the intake and put the stock tune back in.

Find another dealer GT33, honestly you got played..

I have a post on here where I destroyed my tailshaft on the trans trying to hold off my brother in his cobra. We all know my car is charged and so do all of the dealers up here. They see me at every dang car show and car gathering hosted. Got the one piece drive shaft, loops, and a shitload of suspension parts, I removed the tailshaft housing from the trans and brought it to the service counter in hand. Jumped through a couple hoops in paying up front and being refunded the money under the warranty. Paid in full under warranty.

Free advice to everyone - When any dealer denies anything because of parts unassociated to the problem at hand, definately take your complaint up the food chain. It is very likely the dealer didn't even file the claim and pulled the denial under their own decision. Demand that a Ford Warranty Claims Rep come on site and look at the car personally. You'll be surprised how much will get done without argument.
