Custom 12" Sub Box Design Ideas

Hey Guys, I'm about to build a custom box (ported) for my 12" alpine type R. I want it to take up as little usable trunk space as possible, so I thought a great place to build the box to fit in would be right up against the rear seats, and just take up the width of that space. If I could get that to work, that would be awesome, but that's a pretty complex area with a lot of angle changes and such...

I was hoping to get some recommendations or pics of where some of you have put your subs (if you have them). I know not a lot of people on this forum are big into car audio, but I know there are a few of you out there! Thanks in advance!

-Rob

I've got (2) JL 10w7's right behind the seats. They require space, so the enclosure is a space whore.

I don't have any pics hosted of it. I'll see if I can get something up later this evening..

I'm currently working on two boxes (fiberglass) that fit on each side of the trunk just behind the wheels. I also mounted the amp in a small amp rack way up front behind the seat. I may have lost 5-10% of my usable trunk space.

Remove spare and make a false floor with the subs there, dynamat, and plexi to not damage. Only thing you gotta worry about it is water damage, but its pretty watertight in there.

Heres a pic of mine. I custom made them out of 3/4MDF and covered them in charcoal leather to match the interior.

lol, i know its not an SUV, I used to work at circuit city, so I got 75% off kicker products, so I went ahead and got to Solox L7 competition subs. Ive never turned them past 25% because they rattle the car to much. I made two sealed boxes, ported dont work well from our cars from what I read, and my sealed subs have such clean response.

Ported works well in specific configurations..

The two 10w7's were done mainly because of I wanted everything symmetrical, glad I did with the final outcome. It's not SUV material, let me get the pics up, you'll be pleasantly surprised about how I shoe horned my enclosure in there and still retained huge amounts of trunk space while sticking to the volume requirements of the subs.

Good Idea, I have just had to use the spare tire in a car one too many times to do that...

The optimum size of a ported box for this sub is only 1.7 cu.ft. So we're not talking taking up the whole trunk. The port should be 22.75 inches long, with a total port displacement of .305. I guess those are the most important factors to consider in placement.

My brother is a pretty hardcore car audio hobbiest, he'll be helping me build it. We'll be making it out of 3/4" MDF (Fiberglass is expensive and a PITA.) I just want to get some ideas from the rest of you guys. Looking forward to seeing Emay's setup!

Honestly, I dont like having subs in the car, it was cool to drive around bumping at first, but now they hurt my ears. I dont even use them most of the time.

Keep in mind that the port displacement should NOT be part of the box volume. You should also not include the displacement of the sub. This means you should add 0.3 ft^3 and 0.15 ft^3 (rough displacement estimate for one 12) to 1.7 ft^3. Overall, you're going to need a ~2.15 ft^3 box. A ported box is going to require more space than a sealed box.

I did mine kind of like what you were talking about before behind the seats... Custom box But unfortunately you cant put 12"s there you need 13" to put a 12" woofer in... and there is only 12 1/2" if i remember correctly! I went with 2 10" slim mount woofers on the hump ( so i can still get to the spare ) I have the woofers facing the rear of the trunk to give the bass more time to "mature" it sounds a whole lot better that way.

I have two HUGE Solobaric 12" L7s. The magnet is 3x bigger than the average subs, and theyre way deeper than most normal subs. Trust me, they fit
