huh? What do you mean low, you've been putting 5 in? I doubt you hurt anything, it will still provide oil to all the engine parts even if it is 3 qts low. There's less breakdown and heat resistance with less oil, but you'd have to really drive it hard to hurt it.

So you're saying you had to put in 6 and 1/4 qts?

The owners manual says 6. If I put 6 in it takes it up between low and full. maybe closer to full than low but where it should be.

yup i asked here then looked in owners manual and called ford to be sure cus 6 seemed alot for such a small engine. But yeah i buy the 5qrt jug of synthetic and a extra qrt and it takes it to almost to the top of the fuul mark but not Quite.Like 1/8 to just under a 1/4 inch.Ive ran older 70s models cars lower but lets face it 70s era chevys was built a little more abuse proof

I really have no idea what you are concerned about, if you always used 6. Are you saying because it is not all the way to the top of the crosshatch? It isn't supposed to be, it's just supposed to be IN the crosshatch. As far as a lot of oil for a small engine, let me give you some perspective. Most German cars, even small engines like a BMW 2.3, take 7.5-8 quarts. The performance engines, like an M5s 4.9 liter V8, takes closer to 10. Porsche sixes take 10 or more. Lexus' newer 6s take 8. Our engine, but in a van or truck, takes 7.5 or so. A Chevy LS7 takes 10.75. Very few engines take less than 5. Some Toyota and Honda 4 bangers take 4-4.5, and the Prius only takes 3 IIRC. So in the grand scheme of things, 6 quarts aint to bad eh? The old 5-quart standard has been gone for years. And just for wows, the 855ci Cummins inline 6 in my grandpas semi-truck takes 11 GALLONS. How'd you like to do that oil change haha.

What kind of oil filter did you use?
If you installed a larger oil filter you will need to top it up a bit. Make sure you're letting the car sit for 5 to 10 minutes before you check it. |

All of the S197 4.6Ls I've ever worked on took 6 quarts and it put it in them middle of the cross hatches on the dipstick.

There's a lot of people who prefill their filters before putting them in, that's not gonna account for a whole quart, but maybe the splash?
Emay, if you're only putting 5 quarts in, how are you getting the old stuff out? All four wheels in the air or just the front two? My guess is you're leaving some still in there. You probably don't have to worry much with an oil catchcan, and I'm the secodn to last person on this forum to say anything, but still, it's always been 6 quarts for me.
