Leave it on. It lowers your highway rpm's, increasing your fuel mileage when you drive the car normally.
You can shut it off if you want it to be in one gear lower, but it's easier and more fun to just move the shifter to where yo uwant it anyway.

so your sayin it adds a gear?
so instead of 5 i have 6 gears, or does it just make 1 gear last longer...?

and yeah wuts with the 1 and the 2, i always just leave it in drive and thats it...what would be a scenario for using the 1 and 2, since you say its more fun?

You have a 5 speed automatic transmission. 5th gear is your overdrive. Turning the OD off with the button drops you into fourth gear. For normal driving, just leave the OD on.

example for turning it off is like if i were on the highway in my 5 speed manual. turning off your overdrive would be like me shifting into 4th. if you are just cruising you want to leave it on. it will do nothing for your throttle responce.

as for the 1 and 2......
if you are racing from a stop you want to drop it all the way down to the 1. when you are ready for it to shift to 2nd gear push it up to the 2. next would come your drive gear "D". you'll want to shift close to the redline on your tach.

turn off the O/D on city streets and turn it on when you hit the highway/interstate/freeway whatever. the increased load on the tranny with it being in a higher gear when normal driving will wear it out prematurely and if you leave the O/D on in the city, the constant kicking down to pass or whatever will wear it out quicker too. if it's a 4-speed auto leave it in 3rd or whatever your case maybe.

Jat, your transmission has 5 speeds. The 5th & last gear is called overdrive. It utilizes a lower number gear, usually around 0.70 to 1. Your first gear has a ratio of about 3.30:1. meaning first gear is multiplying the engine's torque by spinning a shaft inside your transmission 3.3 times faster than the revolutions of the engine. This does not mean it makes your engine have more torque, it means it is multiplying that torque 3.3 times through use of gears.
Now if you go back to the OD ratio of 0.70:1, this means that the shaft in your transmission is spinning SLOWER than the given rpm's of the engine, which is good for highway driving, as a lower rpm equates to higher fuel economy. However OD does not work well for pulling, since it effectively reduces the torque (not actual numbers at the flywheel) that the transmission sees.Which means the internals of the transmission have to work harder and can wear out faster.
If towing or in high snow turn your OD off, or you can cause early tranny failure due to intermittent on off load shifting.
During general driving it is fine and better to leave it on, even while city driving. The times to turn it off: 1)when you are towing something, or may have a heavy load or 2)when you are driving in the mountains; while going uphill sometimes O.D. will shift back and forth frequently, if this occurs definitely turn off the O.D. so the tranny will not over-heat.
However, the best thing to do, is open up your owners manual and follow what it tells you to do.

im always in the city i live in the city with a lot of stop and go, so would it in the long run hurt your transmission if you leave it on all the time, or does it not make a diffence?

Dude just read your manual, if I type another long post WAVE might tease me again. lol
Seriously, just check your manual, or ask your dealer.IF I had to choose one way myself, I would go with what WAVE said earlier, and have it off in town and on when using the highway.

It does not shift into OD until 45mph. Leave it in Drive with the OD on unless your Towing.

After reading all these posts I can see there is a plethera of information here, but Justincredible said it best in the 2nd post. And for the record it can't possibly have any affect on how you launch Jat, it is 5th gear.

Get a 5 speed and learn to use a clutch, it's more fun and you have better control.

Calculators:
This is a Microsoft Excel Worksheet the calculates Rear End Gear changes and there effects to RPM and Speed. Also there is a calculator that will assist you in selecting the correct Tire size for your car including what Wheel and Tires combo will fit.

look at the gear ratios and this may explain it, play with the calculators watch the graph change it it does not explain it for you at least you get a good show :wink

Download the sheet here.
http://home.comcast.net/~swieduwilt0...lculations.xls

you can get an excel viewer that plugs into your browser here:
