the width if the tire is not going to be your problem, you can put a 315 35 17 on ther but the issue is that its not the correct diameter for your car. it will affect your ABS, TCM, speedo, odometer and everything else that works off the proper rotational speed of the tire not to mention it will look terrible because you will have a huge wheel well gap because the tire is way too small in diameter for the car. the widest 17" tire currently made that will fit the car and also be the correct diameter is a 255 50 17. thats what we sell the most of for people wanting to upgrade to a wider tire and use the stock rims for 17".

I have seen a few guys with 17" running the NITTO 555s on there S197s and they were 275s....I asked all kinds of questions and couldnt see any reason not to go to the 275s.This Monday they go on the car at D'Agostinos race shop and I will let you guys know how it goes.

does uprgading from 235 to 255 on the stock rim have an effect on the speedo.

the real issue is rim width..... your tire really should not be more than 2" wider than the rim.... so work from there.....

the diameter will affect the speedo etc...but a tuner can recal the car for that issue.... if you get a tire close to the orginal diameter your generally ok...

a 255 could be close to stock diameter if your aspect ratio goes down to 5/10 percent.... but you'll need to check the numbers.....

??? the tire width wont do anything to the speedo. The diameter change will. For instance.. you go from 235/55/17 to 235/65/17. Your diameter increased. This means your speedo will be off. One 360 degree revolution of the tire will move the car farther than the 55 series. Now..changing the rim size + will also increase the diameter. But if you go to 18's, or 20's and put a lower profile tire on to say a 40 or 35, you may break even. Tire width will not change the speedometer. diameter will

i have 255/40's front and 285/40's on back and now i can go around on/off ramps at about 60 mph. the wider tires will give you much more grip as long as you get a good quality tire.

Yup. The wider tire means more rubber on the road. More rubber means better control/handling. It also means more grip. Just have a look at why the WW2 tanks were dominated by the Soviets. Their tanks had a wider track. It would not get bogged down in the mud and it handled better. More surface area = good.

somebody obviously doesn't know what they are talking about. Changing the width changes the diameter. If you have a 235/55/17 tire, the 55 means the side wall is 55% of 235. So if you went to a 275/55/17, than the 55 would be 55% of 275. Last I checked, 55% of 275 was differant than 55% of 235, which would mean your diameter is affected.

i got the 18x8.5 and 18x9.5

after the fact i think i should have gotten 9.5 all around and i only wish they would come in a 10 or 10.5 for the rear. as far as the look goes on a black car it is really just up to you and your preference. i do have the alloy grey on my car. the beyonds are almost a perfect match to the color of the paint. a few people actually thought i had them powdercoated to match the car. you can absolutely fit the 20's on there, but the tire will be a low profile and if you go to the drags you won't be able to hook quite as good. if you do go with the 8.5 for the front i would suggest getting a 265 width as i will do next time i buy tires. the 255 is great, but my opinion it needs just a bit more. i would also like to fit some 295's on the back

So if I buy 2 05 factory bullitt 17x8s, and put on 285 40s, or 275 40s, theyll hold on. I want the widest tire that can get a grip on the strip. Thinking of drag radials as of now...any help is appreciated.

w/ 8 in rims i think the 285s are much too wide... recommend rim size for that size tire is 10" from what i saw @ a couple of tire company sites... w/ an 8" rim my reseach told me not to go wider than 255's, which is what I'm going to swap my stock 18" 235's for.....

as mentioned above,...width alone does not effect the speedo.. it's the diameter... if you change the width and not the aspect ration then you will have issues with a different diameter...

you should be able to get 275's on there, but i don't think the 285's will fit. I've never installed a tire that wide on a 17x8 rim.

I think the 275's are also too wide... the tire will bulge....

http://www.nittotire.com/index.html#...Ent555%2Esizes

check out Nitto's site... give you approved rim sizes for different tire sizes

It will bulge a little, but it will easily fit. I've put a few 275 tires on an 8in rim.
