Blown Motor Need HELP!!!

Hi,

I have a 2008 mustang GT with 17,000 miles. I have full bolt-ons and When I got my hot rod cams installed and then put on the mustang dyno I put down 328rwhp and on the drive home my engine blew up!!!!! I was never pushing it. The max RPM i hit was 4000. Both the Dyno and the shop that installed the cams did not claim responsibility. Only the passenger side rockers, valves, and springs blew. I think the shop over/under tightened the cam bolts. I don't know what to do, they said it was faulty valve springs! By the way, the shop that installed them is Pro Modular Performance in Austin, Texas, and the Dyno is Murillo Motorsports in San Antonio. Let me know what you guys think!!

I talked to a mechanic that knows his stuff and he said there is no way to prove it either way. He said that since my motor had such low miles that it was probably installed wrong.

dude....its probably their fault see if they will meet you half way on a rebuild. Maybe the cams were not the same or not ground correctly.

Well if it was a tuning issue, it'd be a completely different issue as to why your motor blew. I can only see there being a problem with the installation of the cams. Sorry to say but it's going to be hard to get them to pay for anything. That's not to say that I wouldn't do everything in my power to get them to pay.

They were swapped from another car that ran fine with them. The guy wanted some more aggressive cams. I would love to go half and half, but they only gave me a 10% discount on labor!!!! I' am going to try and push for more. Is there anything legally i can do maybe???

Are you saying they gave you a 10% discount on the cams because they were used or because the motor got jacked up? If you've already taken the 10% because your motor is jacked up than you're dead in the water.

10% work on the blown motor. They convinced me at the time that they did nothing wrong, but now after doing some homework it seems more like they were lying. They were going to let the car sit there unless it was going to be paid for, so I said get it done and we would talk about it.

Well than really you have zero leg to stand on in court since you took the discount. Sorry man but they definitely gave you the shaft more than likely.

Well, thats what i thought. I am going to try to get them to go 50/50, but the least I can do is say that Pro Modular Performance in Austin, Texas screwed me over and I don't recommend anyone use them. Even if there is a very very slight chance it was not their fault, they have given me crappy customer service during the whole process.

I'm curious as to how much they tightened the cam journal caps. You should ask to speak to the mechanic who performed the work and ask him what the torque spec was. He should be able to say 89 inch pounds without hesitation. 89 inch pounds is VERY loose, but that's the spec. If they overtightened them this would cause lack of oil flow to the cam journals.

How well did the car run before engine took a shit on you? Was it running good or did you have any complaints at all?

How did you know it was only the passenger's side that blew? Did you let them pull the valve cover in front of you or were you somewhere else? After reading your first post again it sounds as though they very well may have left the right side cam journal caps loose and it all just came apart. The only weird thing is the valves and springs. A cam left loose probably wouldn't harm the valves or springs. Keep us posted. If you need another engine we can help you find one cheap...they are out there for a bargain here and there. Sorry to hear this.

I'd like to know this because I have first hand knowledge that if you over torque them just a little bit they snap VERY easily.

When they are torqued correctly there's a space for oil flow that's like a few thousandths between the cam journal and the cap/journal towers. You can over torque them without breaking the bolts and still cut the oil flow to near nothing.

did you sign anything that said "waiver of liability" or something to that effect? Keep copies of ALL paperwork that you have signed and then make notes of all conversations directly after having the conversation (that's if you don't actually record it).

Them merely offering a discount after your motor blew up doesn't necessarily mean that you're dead in the water or SOL...as a matter of fact, it may even HELP you because it may show that they are admitting some sort of fault. At least that's how I would argue it in court. BUT...what they most likely did was say "its not our fault, but we feel really bad for you so we'll give you a 10% discount off of labor if you sign this waiver of liability." At least...that's what I would do if I were them...

and now for my routine disclaimer...

Very good info liar. I agree that they "assumed resposibility" for what happened by offering a discount. I would go on that and the fact that you didnt sign a waiver.

What exactly is meant by the valvsprings, valves, and rockers blew? I don't see pieces of solid metal literally exploding. So what is exactly wrong with them? Sounds to me like you need a head, not an engine...
