LA Preview: Ford Gives 2011 Mustang New 3.7-Liter Engine With 305-HP

Ford has officially announced that it will debut an all-new V6 engine for the 2011 Mustang at the LA Auto Show later this week. The new engine is smaller, displacing just 3.7-liters compared to the old 4.0-liter mill, but power is up significantly. In fact, power is way up with the new motor getting a bump from 210-hp to 305-hp! Torque is up too, by 40 ticks to 280 ft-lbs. Full power comes on at 6500 rpm with full torque at 4250 rpm. Plus, Ford says the new engine will deliver 19/30 mpg (city/highway) with a six-speed automatic or 18/29 mpg with a six-speed manual. Yup, finally a six-speed for the Mustang.

And as though all this we're good enough, the all-aluminum block weighs less than the old 4.0-liter engine.

To achieve all these improvements, the motor uses Ford's Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT). Essentially, this is the same engine that Ford first used in the Lincoln MKS.

Perhaps most importantly, however, is the fact that this new engine trumps that found in the new Camaro – by 1-hp. That certainly isn't much, but by being able to make the claim is certain to help Ford win back some sales from Chevy. And in Ford's smaller and lighter package, performance will no doubt put the Mustang ahead of the Camaro.

As exciting as this new V6 engine news is, we are still awaiting confirmation from Ford on an all-new 400-plus horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine for the Mustang GT. Be sure to follow AutoGuide's live LA Auto Show coverage starting December 2nd.

I would love for Ford to announce the new 5.0 at 425 hp....that number sounds better than 400

Evolution said they had a 5.0 test engine and it was rated at 425hp. But was it for the GT or the BOSS? We will find out in a few days.

That doesnt mean anything.....

It may have 305, but a V6 is going to be bog city until it gets spun up. It wont have the lower torque to get all that mass moving.

Remember the new V6 stangs weigh more than older V8 stangs. Hell I'm far below 3000lbs with my 97 Cobra cranking out 305/300. The V6 is going to be in the 3350-3450 range.

But with a turbo I could see the v6 pony being a formidable ride. Stock it will have top end but down low I doubt it will do much without some help.

Still amazing, I can finally stop hating on posers who buy the weak ass mustang just to look like a fast car. Now it can beat an average v8 SUV instead of losing to non sports cars.

This will be good news for Ford.

Good lord. What's that going to be like with some boost? I'm going to have a slow car again compared to these n00bs

That should pretty much confirm that 2010 is the last year for the 4.6...

Damn, nearly missed the 6 speed part...goodbye 3650. Good riddance.

I'm in awe and I'm surprised about the dual exhaust and 160 mph speedometer. That intake manifold reminds me of the 2000 Cobra R one. Now that the TR6060 is standard in all Mustang models, it looks like TR6060 swap kits will go down in price sharply for us 05-10 guys.

That won't have a TR6060.

"These figures are achieved with the new six-speed automatic transmission, which Ford says is good for a 3 to 5 percent improvement in fuel economy over the outgoing five-speed automatic. Meanwhile the old five-speed manual transmission has also been swapped out for the Getrag/Ford MT82 six-speed manual."

I work for Ford and they have been emailing us fact sheets about the cars.

One thing I found was a difference where one shows the Ti-VCT system being ran by belts, and another shows the engine timing cover pulled and its all chain.

I emailed the drivetrain lead on the project and asked her to clarify. We'll see.

Also has a damn PLASTIC intake manifold again. Of course a feature with "less weight". I'd rather weigh 5-10lbs more without a cracking intake manifold thank you.

So two things to check up on..... timing belt or chain? Will this plastic intake hold up?

I wonder what kind of power is just lurking in the tune. With the ability to adjust valve overlap we should be able to turn down the emissions crap and put some more duration and overlap into the tune and make more power.

Hopefully....

Keep in mind the plastic will dissipate heat better than metal, that's probably a secondary reason why they use it. I've never heard of anyone's intake manifold cracking on the S197's 3v 4.6L....

Long ago that was officially announced. The 5 liter coyote has been publicly Ford verified as the next motor.

They didn't however say the 4.6 was going bye bye. Of course I hope it does instead of this new bad ass motor being an SVT product no one can afford these days.

4.6 will probably hang around in SUVs & trucks for a few more years.

I don't get the excitement over a 6 speed manual. I mean, how much shifting is enough? There actually is a point during my drives where I'd like to NOT be shifting. 4 speeds were always enough for me.
