How to powder coat your calipers @ home

First you are going to need a powder coating kit. I happened to get one for Christmas and decided to try it out. Harbor Freight has one and its not too expensive. You can buy basic colors from them too for cheap. I used their red.
- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

Now, remove the wheel and then the caliper by removing the two main bolts at the top and bottom, (15mm) as well as the brake line bolt (13mm).
Let the fluid drip into a container of your choice and then head over to a work bench.

Start by taking out the pads, then remove the two 12mm bolts that hold the slide rails of the caliper and set aside. Take out all the little metal clips that hold the brake pads in and set aside. Take note of how these were placed for assembly later.

Now comes the "jumpy" part, removing the pistons. Leave the dust covers on, They will slide right over the piston as it exits. Use an air compressor to blow in the caliper where you removed the brake line. Be very careful when doing this part. The pistons will look like they arent going anywhere and then out of nowhere, "BAM", thae come out with vengance. So make sure you do not have your fingers in the way. I put a rag around the the whole thing to keep the piston from going god knows where. Once the first piston comes out, put it back in a little bit, not to far because you will take it back out. Use something to hold it there. It will just be acting as a plug so the other piston will come out. I used a C Clamp. After the two pistons come out, remove the dust covers completely. Then with a presicion tool of your choice, remove the inner piston seals. Be careful with all the seals because if you dont have a caliper rebuild kit you will be reusing them. Clean the seals with a wet rag. Set them all aside.

Remove the bleed valve and set aside.

Clean the caliper parts thoroughly. I used simple green and an old tooth brush. If you have access to a parts cleaner, that would be ideal.

Rinse and then use compressed air to dry and blow out the channels.

Now mask off both pieces. They sell high temp masking made specifically or powder coating, but I just used regular masking tape. Keep in mind if you use regular tape, the adhesive will have to be cleaned off after words. I used WD-40 and an old tooth brush. The adhesive came right off. Mask off all the parts that look shiny and milled. Mask off all the holes as well. Be sure to mask over the piston bores well. You dont want powder sneaking in there.

Pre-heat the oven to what ever temp the powder you are using says to. Mine was 400.

Put a bolt back in the part that holds the pads and mask the end of the blot. Hang the caliper with a metal coat hanger around the bolt ensuring that the hanger and bolt have metal to metal contact. You can just loop a hanger through one of the holes on the caliper. Follow the instructions that came with the powder coating kit. Cover the parts evenly with powder. Too much in spots will cause runs diring baking.

Place in the oven for time specified for your paint to cure.

Let the parts cool.

Remove masking, and adhesive if necessary.

Clean out the caliper to make sure no dirt or debris wound up in the bores. I used some simple green and a water hose, then dried again with compressed air.

Use some brake fluid on your finger tips to lube up the piston seals and then put them back in. Take some more fluid and lube up the piston bore. Here comes the tricky part. It took me a few minutes to figure this out. This way worked the bst for me. Take the piston dust seal and then slide it all the way down the piston. Manuever the seal into its slot on the caliper. Lube the rest of the piston with brake fluid if you havent already. Carefully slide the piston back into the caliper. It will go by hand, but it is a tight fit. If you can't get it by hand, you can use a big C Clamp. Just make sure you put the end of the clamp down into the piston so it will help keep it from getting crooked. Once complete, repeat on other piston.

Put the bleed valve back in.

Assemble the calpier in the same order you disassembled it.

Re-install the caliper on the car with the two mount bolts first, then hook up the brake line. Use some blue loctite on the mount bolts. Make sure the brake line seal seats into flat into the caliper

Repeat all steps for other caliper.

Bleed Brakes and service reservoir as needed.

Check System for leaks

Now you are done. You can see how this will take up a Saturday afternoon. I will add to the write up for the rear calipers after I do them. Well I think thats it.
Have fun.

Yea, I've been trying to decide between black, silver, and yellow. I did red on my 98 but want something different on the 06, though about re-doing my 98 in yellow also.

I just used the oven in my kitchen. I figured that as long as I air it out Im ok. After all, easy off oven cleaner has a shit-ton of chemicals in it. I havent had a problem. If you are worried though, I would just use an old one like you are doing.

sure, you are strictly limited by the size of the oven. Big oven = Big capibility.

You can polish out any cast aluminum part such as those calipers then put a tinted powder coat over them. The end result is candy chrome, the look is similar to anodized, the fittings you find on braided lines (usually gold, or blue or red) The difference is that if done right, the finished product will have much more of a luster.. Another benefit to the appearance is that a cast aluminum piece can be made to look like billet..

Valve covers, polished or machined lip on aluminum wheels, cast covers and engine accesories, etc etc.. If it will fit the oven to bake, it can be done.. Amazing colors available as well. Black chrome, blue chrome, green, red, purple, yellow etc etc!!

Reps brudda, how big is the oven? Can you get a 20" rim in there?

WHOA!! Your not using the oven at home are you?? They say not to do that, not even once, not if you plan on ever roasting turkeys in there again!! Something about ruining the oven by making it incurably toxic.

UHHHHHH You FIGURED????????
I do powder coating..Powder when being cured is FULL of deadly toxins and SHOULD NOT be done in your home oven and cooked in afterwards(Powder Coating 101).You can't just "Air it out"...I really hope you're joking about using your home oven again after curing powder in it.
