I beat on my 5R55 pretty hard over the years and it's holding up so far after 5 years and 68,000 miles.

First on the car was 100 shot Nitrous with bolt-ons, ran like that for 1 1/2 years and about 25-30 track passes with a few street runs.

Next, Saleen supercharger, started out with 3.4 pulley and dropped down to 3.2 pulley, ran like that for 3 years, with alot more track and street runs.

Now 302 stroker 2.8 pulley and more track runs, been running this setup for the last 6 months and everything seems to be going good so far.
having new dynotune done next week, should be in the 565-575RWHP range.

All that's been done to the 5R55 is= swapped out servos for the billet servos and swapped out input shaft for billet input shaft.

Stock for now.

Are coolers in the mix?

Luck of the draw is also out there, some trannys just hold up better than others even with bad tunes while others fail even with the best tunes.

If I go with DRs and a 100 shot and make as many passes I do each year (60+/-) I would expect my tranny not to make it to the end of the season.
Deep Tranny pan here...no cooler.

When you break into the 10's, shit seems to start breaking. +1 on the intermediate band; 3rd gear. Had no problem with twisting the input shaft on drag slicks.

Just noticed this thread had been resurrected!

Happy to report my tranny still holding out. I've only done about 2500 miles since the pulley upgrade and JDM tune, but i have had a handful of passes at the strip (best run 11.97) and also a couple of track days where she got a damned good thrashing! My power levels are in my sig.

I agree with those who say that no matter how good your tune is, (and I am certain that my tune is as good as it can be without shipping the car back to the US for a dyno tune!) there is always going to be an element of luck involved. Also, the way you drive it will be a huge factor too.

I'm worried about breaking at the track and not being able to get home (2 hr drive).
I hear the TCI stuff isn't very good....anyone have any experience to share?

TCI torque converters are crap.

I added their Billet servos and hardened input shaft to my car, and haven't had any problems with those parts.
BTW I was using a PI torque converter.

5R55 holding up to 556/494 so far.

Stock for now.

Cool.....these parts have been in there the whole time? Or recent mods?
Anything else done to the trans?
I'm trying to decern just what exactly I need to do and what exactly I do NOT need to do.
Broken stuff is definitely no fun and neither is paying for high buck stuff that I don't need.
But I guess the worst thing is paying for high buck stuff that breaks anyway....and takes out other stuff in the process.

I appreceate all input from those have treaded these waters and lived to tell about it.
Thank you in advance for your insight.

After about the 1 1/2 years of modding I started paying a little more attention to the 5R55.
Added billet servos about year 2 1/2.
added input shaft about year 4
added PI converter about year 4
Car was bought in June 2006 (I don't own the car any more after May 2011, but person that does is a buddy, he hasn't had any issues with the car either.)

Stock for now.

My 5.4 blower swapped Explorer finally lost 1st & 2nd. Stock trans 13x,xxx miles. -Still do 3rd gear launches, lol

I am waiting to build my other trans for it. Also notice in this vid, I am running the STOCK converter (explorer has 2700 stall). The stock converter NOW flashes to 3800-4000.
When I had all of my gears, I felt the 2700 (which stalled 3000ish) was too much.

It's luck of the draw. My 06 GT 5R55S went at 38000 miles with just Comp Cams Vsr 330 to 340 RWHP. PA Automatic replaced it with the Super Streeter and said that the stock stall converter went and contaminated the transmission. Am running a 530 hp Saleen supercharger with no issues for the past year and a half.

Lower than most at 2500.
Keeps the tires from breaking loose.
