downshifting
As you all know this is my first manual im not used to it at all... now I got shifting up down no problem with that. However when I was crusin along in 4th gear and I slamed on the gas it downshifted for me and took off.... and now I find my self in my mustang crusing in 4th gear... you press the gas it barely moves and I never know what gear to shift down to for lots of power. Some times I even bark the tires when I downshift yet I still have plenty of Rpms before I redline. Im just looking for the max speeds that the gears top out at really.

Not sure what you mean by you floored it in 4th & it downshifted. A manual is not downshifting until you shift it. I've not really paid attention to my exact maximum speeds per gear as I haven't taken mine to the track yet, where you normally pay more attention to things like that. 1st in my 07 is good up to about 25, 2nd good up to about 50, and I think I could stretch 3rd out to 85 or 90. 4th would probably take you up to 130 or so, although I've only had my car up over 120 once, and I wasn't paying attention enough to know how much I had left in 4th, I had both hands on the wheel and was watching the road.
Best bet is to take the time to get to know your car if you plan on winding the gears right out, because other people you ask may have different gearing in their car, and if so will have different numbers than you. |

Run it through the gears with the pedal to the floor. Watch what rpms your at in which gears. It is something that will eventually come natuarally to you with more and more experience. You wont even look at the tach before long, you'll know where your at and where you need to go by hearing the motor.

Well, I have 4.10s in mine, and here's where my gears go to...
1st-35 2nd-70 3rd-105 4th-142 5th-??? I do know NOT to downshift at over 15mph from 2nd to 1st. If the manual says it will hurt the tranny, it probably knows what it is talking about, I wouldnt chance that. I know going about 50, I break loose downshifting into 2nd, and even a little before that. Going 85-90, and downshifting to 3rd breaks loose for a second, then grabs and gets gone..... Hope that helps ya a bit, im not sure what the factory gearing will do.

Just do it at 14mph...lol
![]() I kinda can see why they would say that, but with my 1st going to 35, anyone want to shed light why it would hurt it badly? Maybe I should just swap in the T-56

That's a big strain on the engine & clutch, with 1st having such a high ratio, that's too sudden a surge on everything at once. Try it once just from 20 mph and see. lol (Don't really try it) :wink |

Changing gear well takes a lot of time and prcatice, the key to good/fast driving is being smooth in every aspect.
When you down shift you need to increase the revs. Its very much about feel and practice. I would recommend that you practice going from 4th to 3rd at around 40-50 in order to get smooth changes. As for the car going from 4th to 3rd on its own??? Never heard of that and if it did then I would think there is something seriously wrong. Manual cars just dont do that. Good luck! |

Also you want to look at "Heel Toe" or "Instep /Outstep" techniques to blip the throttle.
It very much depends on whether you are changing down whilst slowing ie approaching a bend or because you want to blast it! Certainly dont go more than 1 gear at a time at this stage. |

im a newbie here but this is my second stang. While i have never taken my car to a drag strip i have taken them to a road course. different game. If you mean cruising along at 55 or 65 in 4th and you want to stomp on it? I would say third. I guess you could do 2nd but i dont, im still babying my stang. But as one person said you really just have to practice. what you have to do is blip the throttle. I think thats what is causeing you to bark the tires as you said. You need to have your rpms up. by bark do you mean hop? Are you letting off the gas when you shit? cause you shouldnt. if you were attempting to go into a turn and slow down you would want the rpms even. if your trying to blow a chevy away on the highway stomp on it while you downshift. your tires shouldnt "hop" (bark) then. maybe they will chirp (spin) a little, but not bark.
let me know if this makes sense. |

Well not letting off the gas pedal through a shift is called "power shifting". No, you do not normaly want to shift this way. Maybe if your at the strip trying to pull off a nice time or in a close street race. It is a litte extreme on the clutch. Ok occasionaly though. So you want to let off the gas, depress clutch, shift, and while your letting out of the clutch go ahead and start getting back in the throttle so you bring your rpms up. Not as rough on the clutch and you will get rid of most of that delay your talking about. So basicly by the time the clutch is all the way out, you are deep in the throttle. Feels GREAT when you get the hang of it.

When you down shift from 4th to 2nd, you are usually only doing this to accelerate hard, or else you would just down shift to 3rd.
So, when you make that drop, after you have moved the shifter in to 2nd, you should be rolling on to the gas pedal as the clutch is engaging. How hard you roll on to it can vary from enough to keep the car from slowing as you hit 2nd, to mashing on it to launch it. If you don't give the engine any gas when you first engage 2nd gear from 4th, the compression of the engine will momentarily slow the car down until you do give it some gas. |
