Who knows about tire & rim sizing?

I'm curious as to what is the largest size tire I can safely put on my factory 18x8.5" wheels. Somehow the 235/50/18's just don't cut it, and as I have other modifications I want to do before buying larger after market wheels, it would be nice if larger rubber would fit on the stock 8'5'ers.
I googled around and couldn't seem to find any consistent information on this.
Any help would be appreciated.

275/35/18's would fit on a stock 8.5in rim.
