4:10 Confusion
I have an 06 GT, was thinking my first mod would be a 4:10 rear end w/Hurst short shifter. Checking with a local Ford dealership that sells Ford Racing Parts, the guy told me he couldn't install the 4:10 without the purchase of a tuner. Fine, except he said I had to purchase a cold air system because they don't offer the tuner separately. He did say I could go with another brand tuner.
I then went to a local specialty place and he told me not to install the 4:10 until I make performance mods first to increase horsepower. He said, install for increased HP first, then add the 4:10 in about 2,000 miles. Are they yanking my chain, or is their some truth in what the are telling me? My hope was my first mods were the 4:10 and shifter followed by exhaust (still can't figure out which one to purchase, but probably SLP LMs). Then, was considering super charging it next year, so I really didn't want to do the cold air intake. Thanks for any help. |

4.10's would improve your quickness now regardless on any HP change but leebunnyz is right if you are going to sc soon you probably don't want the 4.10

Thanks for information. I'm an "oldie," so am only beginning to learn about all this new car stuff.
What I wanted to do within the next two months was new rear end and short shifter first, then new exhaust (mufflers only, probably LMs, no new pipes). Then next year the super charger. So if my plan is to supercharge in a year, can I install the 3:73 as a separate mod--with the tuner and short shifter, without purchasing mods that increase HP such as exhaust, etc.? This is where I'm confused. I thought I could install the rear end, but this hi-performance guy say's I can't...or that he won't. He says I have to increase HP before installing the new rear end. Again, thanks. |

yea i dont see why you can't put your gears in as your 1st mod, never heard of something like that before, but i could be wrong.

there is absolutely no reason you can't do the gears first. some even think that is a great first mod. i think if i were going to be waiting a year to do the sc i would go ahead and do the cai and tuner. after all you should easily be able to sell it when you get the sc. i suggest the JLT cai and SCT tuner from bamachips. if you buy the tuner from him you can get your tunes updated for minor performance mods for free. by minor i mean pretty much everything except sc, turbo, or nitrous. the jlt and c&l are vertually the same gains. jlt is cheaper than the c&l by about 75 bucks. some like the look of the c&l more though.
