Tire pressure for drag radials?

I just got my BF Goodrich drag radials mounted today. I am planning a trip to the drags soon. I was just wondering about what pressure to begin with as a starting point. I know surfaces are different and require different pressures. My car is a 2006 with Steeda CAI, 4:10 gears, drop pullies, open exhaust and SCT tune. And it is an automatic. I may not want too much traction and chance breaking something. The way the car is now with the 4:10 rear, it just shreads the street tires

If anyone has experience with this, your help would be appreciated.

Start at around 16 PSI and then keep droping it until you find your sweet spot!

Thanks.

I am going to be cautious and start at 20 and work my way down according to how it feels. What kind of times are you turning with your car?

Depends on how fast the car is. If the car doesn't 60 foot in the 1.4xs or faster it won't have enough power to turn the rim inside the tire.

How do you know they spun? If they did you are probably the only one that has ever had that problem running a 60 foot like that.

You need to mark the valve stem location on the tire with a paint pen before going to the track. You can tell for sure if you are spinning them. I kinda doubt you are with a 1.90 but mark them and you will know for sure. I wouldn't go below 20 psi on drag radials IMHO. If you go much lower, the tire will cup and you will use the use of some of the tire.

When we run drag radials we run 12 to 14 psi. Any more and we run into traction issues and terrible 60 foot times.

Well since I have been racing a 1400hp 275/60/15 dragradial Mustang for many years, you learn things, To answer your Question you put shoe polish on the rim and the tire in the same spot, after your run you check to see if they still line up!!! Remember these are heavy cars, and if the tire sticks they may spin on the rim. Take it or leave it. With my MT Dragradials I run them at 15-16psi on a 10 inch rim, they have 16 screw per side.

1400 horsepower with a 275/60/15?? Why? How about some more info and pictures of this car.

I asked how you knew the tire was spinning in the rim, not how to check it. I've never seen a car with that low of a horsepower level spin a rim. I've run 3300+ pound junk with slicks and no screws with no rim spin. Like I said, if yours did it is probably one in a million.

Here ya go, with a 88mm turbo the car made 1380 hp at the crank, it ran a best of a 9.03 at 164.86 mph with 22lbs of boost, I have curently upgraded to a 101mm turbo and major changes to the susp. Lookin for high 7's. I'll need to clean up my attachments before I can post a picture or two. Look back tommorow

waitin to see the pics. i'm wondering why only a 275 also if you're pushing that much power. i'm not questioning, but just wondering. doesn't seem like it would be enough tire.

So what is the deal with only running a 275/60-15? How is it only going 9.03 when it runs 164mph? Does it blow the tires off for the first 300 feet? Sounds like you haven't made any clean passes with it judging by the ET and only running 164mph with 1380 horsepower. How heavy is it?

I run the 275/60/15 because I run in a radial class that has that as a spec tire. The car is a 93 cobra, with full interior, stock leather, cd player, with me in the car it weighs 3437 lbs. Yes traction is a problem, I leave the line with 8lbs of boost, the 60 fts are 1.41 to 1.63, the best 1/8 mile speed was 135.21 mph, then the turbo blew up, that pass would have been in the 8.50 to 8.60 range. I'm going to edit my attachments so I can post some pic's. Thanks Gregg

I found the pictures on Stangnet but I don't think they allow linking to pictures on their site. It sure does look impressive under the hood. I just can't get over such a small tire. I always heard 325/50 was the standard in class racing but I guess I need to get out more. I'm going to assume you haven't made a clean pass with the car yet based on the numbers.

Nice. Sorry for busting your balls about it but we get alot of guys that come here that talk the talk but can't walk the walk. They all have 4 digit horsepower numbers but can't back any of it up so I (and others) are skeptical at times. Nice car!
