Saleen S-281 SC and the Roush 427 R

I apologize for not being involved in earlier conversations about these two particular Mustangs but I have to ask....
Is the Saleen a great ride or over-hyped arrogance? Is the Roush 427 R FAST or is it over-rated? Why do so many devoted Mustang fans hate the Saleen? I have never understood the die-hards stance that the Saleen is not a great ride. I have NEVER driven one but am curious for those that HAVE driven one- is it BAD or GOOD.

And to that point- which is better/Faster/Stronger? The 427R or Saleen SC?? Educate me because I feel like I have missed some important points from past posts.

I think that they're VERY overpriced. JMO

I really do not like how the Saleen looks but I think the 427 is one of the best looking cars I have ever seen.

I like both the Saleen and Roush. I've never seen both of them side by side at the strip. I will say that the 427R is a fun ride. Sounds like you may need to test drive both and give us a report. I've test driven a Saleen but it wasn't SC so I can't compare.

Here is the deal. I have been ready to go on a heavy moded 2007 for a long time. It is going to be built by a bad-ass shop out of Tulsa. I have never owned a Mustang and really want a stand-out ride when it comes to performance and originality.

I was being told by a Ford guy in Dallas that I would likely have a hard time wrapping up 19K worth of Mod's into a car loan. I was also told by a Ford guy up in Tulsa that they WOULD finance everything...but wouldn't give me an interest rate over the phone. Whatever.

The Ford guy in Dallas started telling me that I would obviously be paying more money for a SC Saleen but that the financing and re-sell would be SO much better than putting a bunch of mod's on a Stang and then in 3 years wanting to sell it but never get the money back OR having someone who wanted to buy it not be able to finance the moded mustang.

Long story longer...I want a bad ass mustang and will pay for it but I want it to PERFORM the best of any out there. So that is why I asked about the Saleen and the Roush.

You've answered your own question. The sc saleen would be more expensive compared to the 427R but they also put out abit more HP. Remember HP costs money so you have to figure out how much you want and no matter how much HP you have under the hood, there is always somebody faster so all you end up doing is chasing your tail and spending more money. The 427R is a good bang for the buck but its not the fastest street car. So you can spend $50,000+ on a nice fast ride or buy a regular GT and bolt on $25,000+ worth of mods and that would be fast also but it wouldn't sell near as well as a factory Saleen s281 SC. Why not a GT500? I'm sure it will hold its own as well. I've been doing this musclecar stuff for 27+ years and from my experience bolting on parts will make them fast with the right combo but their value won't do much for resale. Find a car that you like visually and you can afford. Brandon Ford in florida sell the Roush Drag Pak car. They run 11.50+- and they only built 50 and they only sell them there. That would be both valuable and fast. You see there are lots of ways to do it. I just picked up this 427R from Joe Cooper last friday. Its all I need!!!

Best of luck on your decisions!!!

You are a wise man. I appreciate the advice and you are right on about HP costing HP-"higher price". Joe Cooper is a dealership that deals a bunch with Tulsa Car F/X. That is the shop that I have been talking to about building my moded Mustang.

The question still stands... what to do? And honestly there are too many choices and no real definitive answers. The 427R is a bad-ass ride and the Saleen SC is bad as well (imho). I know neither one will beat everything but what I choose to go forward with is the one that I want to be able to beat the other. If you know what I mean. Putting together a fully customized ride has been a goal of mine since the early 80's and now it may not be the "smart" choice (investment wise, that is). So I am fucking stumped.

Your ride is awesome and buying a 427R has gone through my mind more than a few hundred times..... so thanks again for your feedback. Now I need to figure it all out.
