Shorty Headers

Well now that the x-pipe has gone in theres talk of maybe short tube headers and some magnaflow mufflers and tips. Now in 5.0/superfords I saw jpa's shortys saying they pick up "23" rwhp. Now I can't remember but either on here or another site I herd they were a waist. Does anyone have any experiences or just some info? THanks!

I can tell you right now that shorty headers are a waste of money period. You are better off sticking with the stock manifolds and putting it toward something else. As for a 23 hp gain in a tech article, magazines nowadays are just a big sales advertisement. Everythiing is increased and no one outside of the magazine world seems to get as much power as they advertise out of anything. I'm a strong believer in getting only L/T headers because in the long run, they really pay off. I'm sure many people can back me up on this.

I expected a response like that, none the less I wanted to be reassured. See we just bought the x-pipe and wouldnt mind haveing long tube headers, but they would need to be cut up enuff to fit and in the end would be pretty short. Would they still work as well?

Long tubes are the only way to go. You will have to cut back your mid pipe a good bit and reweld a flange on it to mate the long tubes. You would be better off buying a short x pipe to mate to long tubes or you will have a choppy look like my H pipe (which we made with stock mid pipe flanges and ss 2.5" tubes):

It would be alot easier to sell the x-pipe, and get the headers and the midpipe to fit the l/t's. It wouldn't put you too far into the whole. Or just save for something else unless you really want the headers. It will really make life a lot easier to have a bolt on exhaust system and it will fit a lot better without having to weld new flanges on.

Exactly. I haven't had any leaks with my system, but I am sure flow has been hindered a little due to the choppy homemade design. The pipes are very good flowing though, and long tubes made a hell of a difference at the high end. something you won't see with shortties

Hmm, well were not in the situation were we are ganna freek with no headers. But weve done nothing but airflow mods and seen nothing but good results at the rear wheels and in the top end... so now Im looking to get some quick results like that again until a kenne belle.

Yeah I guess theres no other choice, alot of the stuff weve done so far will need to go anyways cold air kit, throttle body, and maybe now the x- pipe unless we cut it back a little.

If you don't have any rearend gears already. think about it. I never saw them hurt my mpg that much and if you are going to mod a car like that, why be cheap about it and worry that much about mpg is what I have always thought. Rearend gears are the biggest bang for your money. The actual gears and an install kit is not that expensive and if you find a local reputable mechanic, you can get them installed for cheap too.

We have the gears, but our mechanic rusty was missing a tool for the job, so the installation went back a week.
