Whistling noise?

I'm sitting a little over 4K miles, 2007 GT. I began to notice a slight ringing sound a while back while cruising at low speed. Can't exactly place where it is coming from. If I get on the car, I can definitly hear a whistling, or high pitch scraping, or maybe even a ping? kind of noise (the description makes it sound worse than it is). The noise builds in intensity as the rpms go up. It happens within the first few gears. The car is an auto. The sound is coming from under the hood when accelerating.

I have not experienced any warning lights, smoke, loss in mileage or performance. Just want to know if this is normal or not. And what it could be. I plan to take the car to the dealer for a once over. It's bone stock. Just thought someone here might have some insights that could save me a lost day without the vehicle. I run 89 octane, after experimenting I found the car runs best on it.

Anyone?

your manual says to run 87, not 89.
it could be gas, for 89 usually means ethanol based gasoline. I'm not a fan of ethanol, but thats just my opinion. My stang just runs odd with 10% ethanol..hard to explain

make sure you use specified gas for your car...

If you hear whistling, check your air intake system and air filter to make sure everything looks ok

I would think the leak would have to be in front of the MAF meter. Also check for flaws inside the injected molded intake tube to see if there's any plastic tabs due to a manufacturing flaw (the robots may not have trimmed it completely). Check for tears or manufacturing flaws in the air filter. Also check your pulleys to make sure everything has acceptable tolerances.

Good point flatulence, that whine might be a turbo charger stuck in his intake.

Thanks for the input and advice everyone. I'm going to run this tank down to about empty and then refill with 87. Take things from there.

Update

Took the car in for the 5000 mile service and decided to bring the tech with me to listen to the noise. He agreed it was there and I've been driving a loaner for 2 days now. Apparently changed the intake manifold and a sensor out and still hear it. When I called today I was told the tech was on the ford hotline. Oh brother.

Meanwhile, the whistling noise overall had reduced drastically since switching back to 87 octane for a few tankfulls. I think there was a slight ping before that is no longer there. But the whistle itself still was. Again this is slight but noticeable enough for a passenger to comment. Only happens upon moderate acceleration, like from a stop light. Kicks in and grows as rpms go up and when the car shifts it dissipates. No sympoms of anything besides a noise. No poor performance, no smoke, no lights, etc.

Are there any ford tech guys on here? My car is at the dealer I bought it from so that I could get a loaner. Problem is, my dealer is a Lincoln dealer as I got mine used. While the treament by the service dept and the rest of the staff is stellar, I'm fearful that due to not working on mustangs every day, they may be at a disadvantage.

Anyone?

Give the lincoln guys a fair shot at fixing it. If they can't then try a regular ford dealer.

The tech guys on here are going to throw fixes at it no differently than the dealers would. No codes, no failures, makes things difficult.

Also, for your own piece of mind you can run through the TSB listings to see if anything has come about.

My old car has a whistling noise too, though it only appears sometimes and I think shuting down the AC fixes it... although I'm not completly sure.

Searched the TSBs on this forum and found no match. Just got off the phone with the dealer. They cannot find the cause. I was told the car is back together and can be picked up today. They are going to make an appointment to bring an engineer down on another day to look at it.

Unbelievable.

Both the 06 GT I test-drove and my 07 GT make a whistling noise as I accelerate, it's really noticeable if I gun it and I suspect it's just the stock intake constricting the air and causing some turbulence that makes a whistling sound.

Interesting you say that. I've been waiting to get past this appointment and checkup in order to get a clean bill of health. My gut is telling me that if I upgrade to a CAI and tune I won't hear this noise anymore.

the reason it makes the whistling noise is because the stock airbox inhales through a hole the size of a deck of cards. its kind of like putting a funnel on the intake of a leaf blower. and i agree with your gut.

Thats weird, my 06 is bone stock and doesn't have any whistling noise

My other car started making the whistling noise after I put in a cone filter.
