Looking for Opinions/suggestions on upgrades
Hey there guys, I was glad to find this forums as a newly addicted Mustang fanatic. I recently got an '07 Mustang GT and I'm looking to do some upgrades on it, nothing major, but enough to get the full potential from the muscle. It is still under warranty, so I'd prefer not to void that with any extensive engine work, but any suggestions on viable exhaust modifications or any other light work I could do to make my Pony even better? I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks!
~Animal Sorry, forgot to mention, the car is the basic stock package with no modifications yet, and is M/T. |

Flowmasters or SLP loudmouths, full length headers, x-pipe, JLT cold-air intake, and tune. Thats about as basic as it gets, warranty should be fine. And you dont actually void your warranty just certain parts of it. For instance if I blew my intake from doing a 250 shot of nos I would still be able to go and get the motor for my convertible top fixed if it stopped working. :wink

Get a cai and tuner, axlebacks, midpipe, under drive pulleys, shifter, gears, lowering springs. Should get you well on your way

Also, any clue on what these modifications would run me?

Tuner. 400 bucks with 3 custom tunes.
Intake. about 2 - 350 bucks depending on choice. Exhaust, anywhere from 300 bucks to 1500 depending on how you choose and who does it. Short throw shifter. 300 bucks. If you shop around you can find better prices as well, and it varies on the brand you choose. Check out www.bamachips.com for a tuner/intake combo. Speak to Doug, he knows his shit and will make great tunes for you. Also check out www.americanmuscle.com & www.lethalperformance.com for other stuff, such as exhaust, shifters, and whatever else you will buy as soon as The Bug takes full hold of you. hahahahaha. It will happen, mark my words.

A shifter would only be $180. (correction)
If I were you, I would get a C&L intake and a tuner with custom tunes programed on it. You are looking to get about 20-30 Rear Wheel HP out of it and you will get increased gas mileage BUT! you may get a lead foot after the HP increase

I've already got a lead foot, might as well have the extra HP to go with it

Hell, I just drove to work, a 240 mile one way trip for me, and I drove 85 most of the way and still got 27 mpg. The intake & tune really made a difference for me in mileage.

Highway driving, I usually get around 26-27 mpg as is, I'd love to see what the tuner/intake could do in addition.

It's truly amazing, Captain Crackers. lol
If I keep it down to 65 mph with the cruise on and not drive like a madman, as I did today, I can hit 32 mpg. Sometimes I get tired of talking about it, cuz when I say it, more often than not people just start screaming bs. lol But that's fine, I know what the car gets, and you will find that out too when you score all your new stuff.

Yes, so far i'm leaning towards an exhaust (pretty much been number 1 on my list since I bought the car) and also an intake and now a tuner.
Any recommendations on brands? I've had people suggest H pipes for my exhaust, and someone here recommended x-pipes, not sure where to go with that. |

I believe the X-pipe makes more power personally. I have MBRP exhaust on mine, which is a deeper, more throaty sound. I don't mind loud, but with all the highway driving I do, I didn't want any drone, which is common around 2000 rpm with louder exhaust in the S197's.
As for brand of tuner & CAI, for me it comes down to two choices, the SCT Xcalibrator or the Diablosport Predator tuner, and in the intake, the C&L or Airaid. I have the Airaid intake on mine, and it's a unit that can be used without a tune, so if you're on a budget as I am, and plan on buying slowly, you can get the intake and then the tuner later. The Airaid also has a removable venturi in it near the MAF, so that in the event you ever put a S/C or turbo on it, you can remove the venturi for added flow. I run the Diablosport tuner on mine, from the Bamachips place I mentioned, with a 91 Octane performance tune at the moment. Typically your 3-tune package will come with an 87 octane tune, a 91 octane torque tune, and a 91 octane performance tune. The torque tune adds power lower in the powerband, up to about 3500, and the performance tune adds it higher, over 3000 or so. You can get Doug to make whatever tune you like, including race tunes, and 93 octane tunes if you don't mind paying for the better gas. |

For an exhaust, I am looking for something that will add power, but I don't want anything annoyingly loud, leave that to the rice burners. I'd like a good strong bass sound to my exhaust (as any V8 should sound like) What is the MBRP exhaust you have? sorry, haven't heard that term before and I'm not the most car saavy person.

Most exhaust, if you're talking about just doing an axleback system, or the mufflers, only add a few horse. An X-pipe will add about 8-10 horsepower, provided you have added the intake and tune so you can utilize that better breathing capability of the exhaust.
MBRP is a brand name. Here's a link to what I actually have on my car. It's the first one of the two listed there. Clicky here You can click on the speaker to hear sound clips of it, or the camera to see different pics. |

I like the sound of that first exhaust. And yea, I know even a great exhaust doesn't add a hell of a lot to your power, but even those few extra horses can make a huge difference.
