Bigger tires while not changeing rims

Like every one knows my dad has a 2006 mustang gt. We want some rather large tires to go in the rear, that would really help traction, be reliable, and raise the rear end to give the car a more aggressive look. But most of all we want larger tires and still be able to keep the stock gt rims. Would this be possible?

Will a 315/40/17 fit an 8" or 9" wide wheel? I was under the impression that they would be stretched out pretty far, so a 275/40/17 or 285/40/17 would be the largest to fit the stock Mustang wheels.

I wouldn't try a 315 on the rear with the stock rim.Maybe a 275 at most.
Of coarse this is just my opinion, but to me the rear of the GT sits like a "stink bug" already, for a aggressive look,i would go with 20 inch rims and drop the car a couple inches.Put some drag radials on the stock rear rims for track nights.
I already lowered my car 2 1/2 inches,now i just need the 20"s.
Slammed cars look much more aggressive.Heres my temporary stance in the first pic,the second pic is with 20's and a 2 inch drop.

Yeah tirerack.com is the best thing in the world. I found my Fuzion tires on there for about 125$ when they are really like 275$. Took a printed page of the add to a tire store and got the discount down to 100$ a tire. Cant beat a good steal. =]

I like the stance the way it is. Also even if I did lower it every time I pulled into 7-11 I would bottom out.

Flat, I believe the stock wheel width is 8" I don't believe much over a 275/285 will work. The photos I posted were of 9" wide wheels..

The maximum width recommended for an 8" rim is 255. A 9" rim will take a 275. Anything over these sizes may well "fit" but in effect will have pinched shoulders forcing the tyre into a rounder profile like a motorbike and your tires will end up wearing in the centre and you'll get less grip. The sidewalls of the tires need to be roughly parallel to maintain the tread being flat on the road.

You can make the tyres look taller by having a wider width and taller profile (although the stock 235/55 is uncomfortably high anyway). A taller profile will mean more flex in the sidewalls and less precision in steering feel and less initial bite.

The simple fact is that a lot of Stangs are overtired and look a bit questionable to be honest and is the equivalent of putting a giant spoiler on the boot.

I have some 275/40-17's ET Street's mounted on stock 05' wheels (8"). come pick them up, I'll give you a good deal. They still have 75% tread. I'll have the wife take pictures if you want.

I have the 18" polished bullits...these are what I mounted my 275 E.T. streets on...http://www.americanmuscle.com/ch20mubuwh1.html...mine are deep dish though...maybe they don't have the dished rims in stock right now...anyways, nobody can tell that they're an inch smaller, and with the lip, they look real good...if you wanna run them on the track or rice hunting on the weekends, it's a pretty good match...I should have got the polished instead of the chrome, because the chrome one are slightly brightrer than the stockers...but it looks like they're out of those too...
