Ford versus Chevy

Comments from a Chevy guy.
I had a nice conversation with a long time Chevy (GMC) fan. This guy had corvettes, cheveles, and other GMC products all with tweaks for speed. He told me point blank that Ford hit a home run with the 2005 + Mustang. He hates Ford too. He said Ford made the new Mustang look like the old and is worried that Chevy will not answer with such a hit.

no offence to the guys driving 2004 and older mustangs but i never would have bought a car untill i saw the new mustangs. i have always owned big diesel trucks that push out over 1k torque. my favorite truck i ever owned though was a 74 ford f250 on 44 inch boggers with a 6.9l twin turbo international diesel. i was able to litterally pull houses. getting use to a car was seriously something i loved to learn to do.

Yep, I was always sort of ambivelant about Fords; didn't neccesarily dislike them, didn't really like them. I did not like the redone Mustangs (04 etc.) But when the 05's came out, man, I thought those were sweet!

I always wanted one, so when the opportunity came to snag mine I jumped on it. Now we are a Ford family. Wife has a nice Focus that we drive to do pennance to the environment for the Mustang. lol

My family use to be big on GMC.

Ever since my dad had his 7.3L F250 and my Mach1, we have turned to Ford and aren't looking back. I still have some respect for dodge, little bro has a Hemi/ all-wheel drive grand cherokee and it is actually fun to drive! I would race any 4 or 6 banger in that thing....

Ford hit jackpot with the S197, you can do SOOO!! much to the apearance and the aftermarket is huge! not to mention you can run 10lbs of boost on these cars safely compared to the 6lbs you could run on the old GT's and Mach1's. If Ford keeps the styling very similar to what they are now but bigger motors in the future, NO ONE will be able to touch ford.

My father in law makes me turn off the radio and drop the windows, he is over 80 years old and is a ford guy.

I was happy to get what I could until these s197 came out. I was looking at a 68 camaro and did not feel like doing all the work on a restore. I always loved the pre 74 cars. Ford did a nice job on these cars and I went and got one. Now I feel like working on it but damn, I find it hard to mess with but like the 67 camaro I had and other cars I owned, I will end up like before, on my back on concrete or bent over a fender.

The market is wide open and now we wait for GM and Dodge, this is all good.

I have always loved the Stangs. Not to hot on the rest of their cars. When I bought mine I was looking at an 04 Cobra but when I saw mine and drove it, it was love at first bite! Still in lust to this day!

I have always been a Chevy/Pontiac guy I have never owned a Ford in my life. The only cars I have owned are Firebirds and Vettes but when it came time for me to buy a new car in 2006 Mustang had no competition! No Camaros, Firebirds, Transams. The GTO looks like a import and all the Hemi cars are too heavy and did not come in a convertible. So the Mustang Gt Convertible was the only win win situation for me.

I'm a GM bloke I'm afraid. My first American car was a 1985 Corvette C4 then came a "stop-gap" 1981 Mustang 3.3 Ghia which had no power at all but was likeable - but it was still a mystery why they sold so many. Then came a 1987 Z28 with a fairly arthritic 5.0 V8 (still faster and better looking by a country mile than a Mustang though) before one of my all-time favourites, a 1998 Camaro Z28 with the LS1. man, that car was fast and taking it to the track, even stock, running in the 13s, wiped a lot of smiles off the faces of so called fast car drivers here in the UK. Modifying it just made it better and better. Still it was a mystery to me why Mustangs outsold this jewel of a car.

It was a tragedy for me when they killed the F-Body in 2002. I bought a Corvette Z06 in 2004 to try to fill the void but 2 seats weren't enough. Like many people, the S197 was a real shot in the arm - the first Ford that had a real "WOW" factor. 300hp was still a bit lame but I knew adding a supercharger and suspension mods would bring it up to Z06 performance for pretty much the same money as my 2002 Z06 was worth and I'd have my 4 seats.

Well the stock GT was a bit disappointing - too soft but the mods cured all its weaknesses and now it runs with the best. I still think it lacks some of the character of the Z28 and I don't trust it not to go wrong like I did my Z28 but it looks good and goes hard.

There are still some features of the design that are not perfect and after never tiring of the subtle curves of the Z28 in 4 years, the Stang is a bit "saloon car" for my tastes. I also think that it responds to a "formula look" that just about everyone subscribes to so it's hard to have a car that's really different.

Long and short, it's a great car and a home run for Ford but I confess if they'd brought out the new Camaro in 2005, I'd still have bought one of those even though, like many GM designs, it takes longer to grow on you and then you can't get enough of it. I know it's a question of costs but saying you can blow the Stang to go faster than the new Camaro ignores the fact that you'll be able to blow the Camaro just as easily.

The other factor you can't ignore is that the Camaro is going to be a great car and not a re-engineered 300C like the Challenger. I just hope GMs marketing department don't screw it up like they normally do.

Would I change the blown S197 for the new Camaro? Depends on the price of course but yes unless Ford perfect the S197 design and give it a bigger engine. Can't help thinking that GM pulled an ace out of the hole developing that sweet pushrod engine.
