Don't base the tranny problems of yester year off of the 604 trans and the clutch pack issues from about 5 to 10 years back. That trans is end of life and Dodge is stil suffering through peoples bad memories. Honestly they are building quality equipment and this lifetime thing is not going to put them under. It's a really good move at a really good time for them.
Read the fine print it excludes all the performance lines as well as the diesel's. That means none of the SRT line up and none of the Team Viper qualify. There's more fine print about some of the lesser vehicles and the Hemi loaded cars as well. With other verbiage about specifics to what the power train lifetime warranty will hold. Lets not forget, most people off their cars these days in 3 to 5 years, this deal is only good for the first owner. Once they jump into something else and that car is resold that car is fair game for repair. They rolled this out at a time when their sales are in the toilet and believe me the general public is going to flock on over to see what it's all about. Drawing people to the showroom at a point where they are going to be releasing some quality new models (the Challenger for instance). I worked for Dodge Chrysler in the warranty portion of the business for several years out of college and I figured this would have been done far sooner. The way they ran the service contracts after warranty end had them pretty much in the same position as this places them. Also remember this warranty sets up the customer to bring the car in and possibly be upsold on additional customer paid labor. Brake jobs, trans services, normal wear will sell. Back in my day about 2 in 5 customers could be upsold on some type of minor service. Not every customer is the hands on get in and do it yourself type guy. They'll make a little money on this, not amounts like they could, but they will make money. The question is, will Ford and Chevy be forced to follow suit if Dodge really succeeds?

I think it's a smart move. The Koreans did the a similar thing when their cars were crap by giving out a 10 year warranty. Everybody thought they would go bankrupt and instead they are kicking some Japanese ass. Now Hyundai is nipping at Toyota's heels on quality.
Offering $3-5K discounts wasn't helping Chrysler. This probably will. Sure the car is crap, but it's warrantied forever. People don't think about the hassle it is to get a car fixed...frequently. This will also motivate Chrysler to fix their quality problems. The warranty doesn't transfer and most people only keep a new car 5-6 years. Besides who wants to keep a car when the AC, cruise control, radio, wipers, and turn signals don't work. None of that is covered by the lifetime warranty. The only place where this will hurt is the Jeep division. As long as a Jeep will run those crazy off roaders will keep driving it. They probably have a clause about the warranty is void if you take your vehicle off road. Chrysler can cover themselves well in the fine print and still get all the good press for a lifetime warranty. I say smart move. I wonder how many Challenger owners will not mod their cars because it will void the warranty?

not just that, but if I remember correctly, you have to have all services performed at the dealership, in order to keep it, along with every single scheduled maintenance.

The how Hyundai warranty is, yes its 10 years and yes it transferrable. But you have to have everything ( including oil changes ) done at a dealer. Now if you add up the oil changes, the 15k,30k,ect... services, with any repairs that adds up to some loot. So really your paying out some serious money for that warranty.
