Removing cats from an 05
Hi,
Other than BBK shorties and UK sourced axle backs, my exhaust is stock. I want to remove the cats and replace with tube! Do I need to re tune the car?... Im guessing not. |

you will need to turn off your o2 sensors via a tuner if you decide to get one, cause your car with throw a check engine light if you dont. or you can buy a pair of MIL Eliminators that plug into the sensors and trick the computer into thinking you still have cats. they run roughly $40

Thanks guys. I think I am going to go for the MIL eliminators- Pacifica Performance seem to sell a nicely prepare3d set.
Ive no idea how much cutting cats would cost in the US as I am going to do it myself. The cost of shipping and importing an X pipe is just not worth the power upside (£/bhp). My tune comes from BAMA si Im guessing its locked. Im quite happy with the way the car is running so Im happy not to change it -or attempt to, hence the MIL eliminators By the way, I have seen Lightnings go through emmissions tests over here in the UK de-catted. Apparently, the EU emmissions tests do not allow for US imports

All you need to turn the rear 02 sensors off is either get a tune that has them turned off...Or buy a SCT SCAL2 and turn them off with that... |

As there is so much plumbing around the airbox, I couldnt see how to obviously funnel cool air into the airbox. I couldnt see a neat scoop option given the location and didnt want to fit a shaker style system with extra piping running into the throttle body etc. So, I bought 6 x 1/2ish" dia plastic tubes that would ordinarliy be used for plumbing washing machines ( ). I then cut 6 appropriate sized holes in the lower drivers side valance (where there is the style'ised honeycomb). I then used plastic metal bonding to afix one end of each hose and then ran the other end around the factory plumbing into the airbox. I then cut the tubes 'to length' inside the airbox and cable ties hold them in place. Finally i fitted a fine mesh over the holes and rattle canned it to match the valance. Its not in the slightest bit noticeable. Ill post some photos later. Guys I have no idea if it makes any difference to speed but without doubt, cool air gets pushed into the box. I guess its another box checked on the 'gain more speed' sheet. My ET dropped by 3-4/10ths next time out though that did include using M&H DR's in place of SP9000 street tires !!!

Ram Air images
I am not sure how to post images into a thread so I have attached links!
This one shows the front valance honeycomb and the place to cut the 6 holes, albeit on the drivers side! You could do both sides linking both sides together via Y fittings prior to running up into the airbox but I did not think of it in time! Equally, the hoses would run 'in open air' between the two honeycombs and I am not sure they would stand up to the elements. http://uk.msnusers.com/General1/shoe...hoto&PhotoID=4 This one shows the hoses in place and the mesh placed over the top along with various dead things picked up along the way! (I used a fine body repair mesh) http://uk.msnusers.com/General1/shoe...hoto&PhotoID=5 This one shows the hoses routed up into the airbox. I didnt leave any slack - obviously, there is no room and I doubt it would help. http://uk.msnusers.com/General1/shoe...hoto&PhotoID=2 In an attempt to get air swirling around the filter, I cut the hoses and attached them at various locations, secured with cable ties. http://uk.msnusers.com/General1/shoe...hoto&PhotoID=6 Here is the finished underhood http://uk.msnusers.com/General1/shoe...hoto&PhotoID=1 and here is the finished pedestrian view http://uk.msnusers.com/General1/shoe...hoto&PhotoID=3 Hope this helps... |
