Bassani Offroad X-Pipe and Borla Cat Back Exhaust

I recently purchased the Bassani offroad X-Pipe with a Borla cat-back exhaust for my 2006 Mustang GT. The only other mod is a K&N Aircharger. The sound from the exhaust was horrible. There was all sorts of crackling and it generally sounded like crap. I took the X-pipe off and the Borla's sounded great. Bassani won't take them back and said I should invest more money and buy their high flow cats. They said the Borla's were causing all the crackiling when coupled with the offroad X-pipe. Have any of you heard of this? Are there any reccomendations before going on to blow another $350 on cats (not even sure that they will work as advertised)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes that is the problem. That muffler with no catalytic converters will crackle and pop on decelleration loudly. Add cats and it will tone down the crackles a bit.

Be sure to get high quality catalytic converters. If you drove the car without cats, did you also have a tune to turn off the rear oxygen sensors? Did you happen to throw a Check Engine Light?

I know from experience that without cats, it is much much louder, and with a crackly muffler to begin with, removing cats amplifies the sound. Some people actually like the crackles, but to each his own.

I am just wondering if you threw a CEL without cats, or if you purchased MIL eliminators to "turn off" the rear oxygen sensors.

I had a Bassani catted x with the Borla Stinger catback on my Mach. It sounded awesome and got lots of compliments. No raspiness or cracking at deceleration just a nice low gurgle. I now have longtubes and o/r x and there is some rasp to it but it sound absolutely wicked at WOT. I would put your stock midpipe back on until you can pony up the $ for a set of good flowing cats.

THis would not be the first time i have heard problems with catless x-pipes. I had a customer with a BBK catless x and he complained about the same problem. However, i have noticed the main diff. is with the x type, and not as prominent with the h style.

I don't get much cracklink with an offroad Prochamber and Flowmaster mufflers. Alittle if decelerating from high rpm, but I kinda like it

AtlanticBlue99, my stang never threw the infamous CEL. I was completely surprised and was expecting to have to use the MIL eliminators. All I did was throw the oxygen sensors in the treaded holes provided on the Bassani X-pipe and bolt the rest together. No problems like that at all. I have no tune on my ride currently, but just ordered the Diablo Predator. I heard a great many good things about this tuner and will likely go with the 91 octane tune; alas, that probably belongs on an other thread sorry for digressing:-)

Pickperf, did you ever figure out what the deal was? It seems to happen predominantly around the 2K to 3500 range. Interestingingly enough, that's where my Borla's are the loudest (drone wise). I guess my major disappointment is that Bassani said it was the Borla and they apparently don;t "work" with Borla. I'm just frustrated to have spent the money on it to have it sitting in my basement. The funds could have gone to something more productive, you know?

I love my bassani x-pipe...IMHO get rid of the catback...Keep the X-pipe...

O/R X-Pipe + Chambered Cat-Back = Goodtimes

Catted X-Pipe + Straight Through Cat-Back = Goodtimes

Any other mix not so IMHO...

No rice crispies here.

If you like the sound leave the o/r x pipe on and put your ford stuff back on.
You did save your old parts right.

flattusmaximus78, darn right. I have the old parts. I actually received a call from Bassani today after an e-mail to them regarding the problem. While I still spent the money with them to buy the high flow cats to use with my already purchased x-pipe, they gave me a KILLER price on them. They believe it will solve the rice krispies issue. I'll post what I found out when I get 'em on.

BTW, the video clip sounds great. If mine sounded like that with the x-pipe, I would have loved it. Thanks for the clip and your ride looks great!

Received the cats this past weekend and installed them. While it sounds LITTLE better, it still stinks. I'm keeping the Borla's with stock h-pipe and selling the entire Bassani setup. Thanks for the help and advice. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. TTYL!

You should have went with the Stainless Works setup! Better bang for the buck! They stand by their product and go out of there way to help you. I am proof of that. They work hard to make sure every customer is happy and not left starnded like you experienced. They are great guys!

Here's a link to their 05/06 stuff.

I have ran the Borla Stingers on both my former cobra and also on mt 05 GT... both combos are the same.. Shortie Headers, Bassani High Flow X pipe and borla Stingers and it has to be the best combo for those mufflers.

I am running PYPES off road h-pipe with the Borla Stingers. Exellent sound. none of that raspiness you get with an x-pipe. it is loud when you get on it but cruising at 65+ is nice and quiet. the sound is very deep and low from the h. I also don't have cats. gives you an even deeper tone with the stingers.

my advice is to check out some videos on youtube.com
search "h pipe stingers" and a video will come up of a red gt with white stripes. check out that video. sounds amazing. it's what made me decide to go with that setup.

Thanks all. I will have to revisit the mid pipe/header dilemna again soon. I really hated spending the money on all that only to have to sell it at a loss on eBay. I will certainly listen to more videos. The thing is, I like the way it sounds now, but wish the damn H-Pipe didn't weigh 200 pounds. It's darn heavy. I'd like to invest in headers and new mid-pipe for better exhaust flow, but will have to listen to many more clips prior to deciding this time.
