99-04 vs 05+ GT's

Hi all,

this is my first post to MM and I've come looking for some opinions!! I currently own an 01 GT, which is the first stang that I have owned, and I am pretty happy with it. The engine is completely stock and my only mods are Eichbach pro kit lowering springs and flowmasters. I have never been in an 05+ GT but love the looks of them.

Here's my delemma..... I am going straight to Kenne Bell for my engine mod but in reviewing their technical data it appears that the 3v is the way to go. As I'll be spending $5k+ on the s/c, I am wondering if I am better off selling mine and purchasing an 05+ GT because of the added power it will make.

I've read many reviews on both models but I always feel that it's better going to people who own them for their thoughts. This is why I am posting this in the 05+ section....hopefully someone has owned both models and can shed some light for me. Pound for pound is the 05+ GT that much better??

Sorry about the long post but I wasn't able to find any info in the forums..so I'm hoping you all can help!!

Thx..

MacGill

i think the difference in HP is about 20-40. if your 01 engine is still good i would keep it and get the KB, it would save money. then after you put a lot of miles on it u can sell it and get a s197 later. or if you got all this extra money burning a hole in your pocket you can loan some to me and i can put a KB in my s197.

the 3v will make more power than the 2v mod for mod.

you could always just get a 4v and beat them both

welcome to the forums.

Let me say first welcome to the site! I had a 02 gt before I got my 2006 and there is a major difference in the two. MY 02 had almost every bolt-on part you could buy except gears and it was a blast to drive and the only thing left to do was a supercharger. My 06 has cold air intake, brenspeed tune and exhaust. It will blow my other car away with just those mods. The interior is much better as well. If your wanting more power and have the money to spend go get you a 03-04 cobra you can get one with low miles for about what you'll spend on a newer model car. I drove two of them before I got the 06 and they are bad stock. I wanted the cobra but the wife stepped in and over-ruled me. She had a fit over the new car so there you have it.

Mod for mod the 05 is faster, it handles better, and the interior is much nicer, as is the stock sound system. I had an 02 and 03 GT before this one and I can say it is far superior. How mush would you be willing to spend on a new car?

Thanks for all the responses....I will have this car paid off next year and if I flip it.. listing prices in Canada for a black 01 GT with 57k miles is anywhere from 12-15k(high) (autotrader.ca) depending on the condition of the car, which in my case is pretty mint (second owner) but I think the quick sale would be $12-$13k. I just bought the car in July from the USA and the underneath still looks brand new! If all goes to plan and I get the quick sale I would use this as a down payment for the 05+. I've checked both autotrader & ebay (where I found this car) and anywhere from $21-25k you can get a low mile 05 GT (excluding performance upgraded or kits.)

I was thinking a corba but I read an article on Kenne Bell (sorry no link) which was titled "3V the new 4V" and they had nothing but great things to say about the 3V. Question....and sorry if the comparison has already been made,

If I put a 2.6L KB on the 05+GT, which would be all the performance I would need or want, and aside from which one you could make faster, would I be getting an overall better made car?

Thx again....

MacGill

The Cobra will smoke the GT anyday of the week unless you mess with the GTs internals. The Cobra has forged internals meaning you can boost the hell out of it and make huge HP. If you can find a low miles Cobra for a good price, then jump on it. And make sure it is a 2003 or 2004 Cobra.

only the 03-04 cobra's. If you can't find one of those, then get a 05+

the 03's had a head tick issue.

it was fixed in the 04's and most of the 03's.

I see.... I've just been looking on the net at some 03-04's...are these engines ok even into the higher miles? Someone was telling me that they are pretty much bullet proof?

Thx.....

yes.. they are very good engines.

and you are correct about being almost bullet proof.

forged internals and a blower from the factory is a good thing.

You might as well call them bullet proof. The have had more than 1000hp on an internally stock motor.

+1 to Juco. If you can't find a 03-04 Cobra get a 2005+ GT.

Well thanks for all the advice...much appreciated!!

One last thing....and please correct me if I'm wrong. For my 01 GT I've been told not to surpass approx 425rwhp otherwise I will need to start upgrading internal engine parts. From what I've been told here...I won't have to worry about it with an 03-04 Cobra (as I will never hit 1000 hp). So if I find a deal that I can't pass up on an 05+ what limit (RWHP) is safe to reach on the 3V (with a KB) before I would need to worry about further internal upgrades.

Thx again...
